The Price of Half-freedom: Manuel de Gerrit de Reus; Enslaved, Condemned, Pardoned & Freed

September 15, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - December 22, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

The Price of Half-Freedom is the story of the first free Black residents in what was to become New York and the events that led to their emancipation: a murder, a trial, and a failed execution. This story exemplifies the kind of Black solidarity and Black resistance worthy of our memorialization.

The Price of Half-freedom will be exhibited September 15 – December 22, 2022 at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center located at 81 Barclay St., New York, NY 10017. Fiterman Art Center is open Wednesday – Friday, 12-5 PM.

Artist Jean-Marc Superville Sovak is  a friend of Underground Railroad Education Center. Support his efforts to carry forward the empowering stories of our communal ancestors who were agents of change and models for us today.
