ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — ALBANY, NY (WRGB) — Assemblymember Gabriella Romero has awarded a $30,000 operating grant to the Underground Railroad Education Center (UREC) to support its new museum studies program. Lacey Wilson, who will lead the teen museum studies program, said the grant will allow high school students to learn art, history, and science through local museums.

“They will decide over the course of sometime and training about what stories they’d want to tell, what more history they’d like to get further invested in and be able to share with us. It’s really a perspective that we don’t see very often,” Wilson said.

The grant comes in response to federal funding cuts by the Trump administration, which Assemblymember Romero said caused organizations in the Capital Region to lose millions.

“This administration is trying to erase but also rewrite Black history and the history of slavery,” Romero said.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan emphasized the importance of recognizing spaces that teach the nation’s full history.
