The Freedom Seeker’s Experience Through NYS
November 28, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Join Saladin Allah of Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, Mary Liz and Paul Stewart of Underground Railroad Education Center in Albany, NY, and Charlotte Jackson of The Bowne House Historical Society in Queens, NY for a virtual conversation about the Freedom Seeker’s experience in New York State.
New York State, cast as a safe haven in the traditional retelling of Underground Railroad history, was a far cry from being a sanctuary for Freedom Seekers. State laws, deep rooted financial connections to enslaving states, and a history of pro-slavery sentiment among NYS residents set the stage for dangerous conditions for Freedom Seekers. And yet, many Black and White abolitionists broke state and federal laws as the assisted Freedom Seekers in their journeys.
