BARBECUE
August 21, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm
$15 – $20BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara
Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York (BTTUNY) kicks off their 2021-22 Season with an outdoor production of BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara. BARBECUE centers around the O’Mallerys, a dysfunctional group of siblings who come together for a park barbeque in order to stage an emergency intervention for their sister Barbara, whose drug habit has gotten out of hand.
BARBECUE will take place at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence at 194 Livingston Ave. with performances on August 20-22 and 27-29 at 6pm. Seating will be under a tent in the backyard of The Myers Residence. Street parking is on Livingston Avenue and on Third Street.
“At first, “Barbecue” appears to be a whiteface take on O’Hara’s usual themes, but then, about fifteen minutes into the show, he flips the dramaturgical switch. As Lillie Anne, howling, tries to get everyone onto her intervention fantasy train—it’s one way to keep her siblings together—the lights go down. Before long, they come up again, and we are watching the same family dressed in the same way on the same set, but now they’re black…” (The New Yorker, Hilton Als).
