Austerlitz Historical Society – A New Interpretation of an Old Story
September 17, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join Paul and Mary Liz Stewart at The Austerlitz Historical Society on sunday, September 17 at 2pm for a riveting dive into a new interpretation of Underground Railroad history and its relevance for us today.
Independent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center, Paul and Mary Liz Stewart bring their seminal research on the Underground Railroad movement to the public. The Underground Railroad, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels, dark of night escapes, coded language and hidey-holes, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of slavery in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with the Stewarts as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center, Inc. is engaged as it works to connect the public with this local history and its relevance for us today.
