Faith communities were as conflicted as the nation in the antebellum period of American history. Some supported the institution of slavery, others supported its abolition, still others were unsure of their position. Some denominations split over their differences. Some chose to dedicate their energies to work to eliminate the stranglehold of this system of inhuman bondage, acknowledging their calling to ensure that the good news message of equality and justice applied to all.
