The AME Church
Israel AME (African Methodist Episcopal) Church on Hamilton Street in Albany. It is known historically as having been a stop on the underground railroad, and Harriet Tubman is said to have slept inside it against one of its walls. It has long been a place where community meetings and gatherings were held. It is the oldest African American Church in Albany. As the civil war started it was a place where black recruits for the union army drilled before going off to war. It has been rebuilt, or renovated several times in its history.
