SUMMARY:Agents of Change\, Voices of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Since 1976\, every President has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a theme. The theme for 2024 is African Americans and the Arts. Black history\, Black lives\, accomplishments\, and needs matter in February and every month of the year. Black history is a critical part of US and international history. We must work continuously on further recognizing and respecting the amazing impact of our Black community in our reality. This year’s theme explores African Americans’ influence on various forms of cultural expression (source: History.com).\n\nExcelsior’s Center for Social Justice and the Race and Ethnicity Rope team are hosting a virtual dialogue at 3 p.m. on Feb. 8 with Paul and Mary Liz Stewart from the Underground Railroad Education Center to commemorate the special month. Paul and Mary Liz are independent researchers and co-founders of the Underground Railroad Education Center\, a public history organization that highlights the voices of Black abolitionists and freedom seekers and which is dedicated to researching\, celebrating\, and preserving the local and national history of the Underground Railroad movement\, its international connections\, and its legacy to today’s social justice issues\, thereby empowering people of all ages to be agents of change toward an equitable and just society.\nPlease join the Excelsior community and register: https://excelsior.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_HbdfW9BAT5-XxTLripYS_A  \nVisit the Communities page for more information: https://communities.excelsior.edu/events/2024/02/08/agents-of-change-voices-of-freedom/ \nVisit Center for Social Justice – Excelsior University

SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad Revisited - Claverack Senior Citizens
DESCRIPTION:The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language\, and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of enslavement in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join Paul and Mary Liz Stewart\, independent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center is engaged as it works to connect the public with this empowering local history and its relevance for us today.

SUMMARY:Albany's Underground Railroad and Faith Communities in Action
DESCRIPTION:Join with Paul Stewart and congregants of Westminster Presbyterian Church on Sunday\, February 11 for a sermon\, “Albany’s Underground Railroad and Faith Communities in Action” to be delivered by Paul Stewart at the 10am service. \nFaith communities were as conflicted as the nation in the antebellum period of American history. Some supported the institution of slavery\, others supported its abolition\, still others were unsure of their position. Some denominations split over their differences. Some chose to dedicate their energies to work to eliminate the stranglehold of this system of inhuman bondage\, acknowledging their calling to ensure that the good news message of equality and justice applied to all. Join with Paul Stewart at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Sunday\, February 11 to hear more about the work of those faith communities who chose to work for justice and equity in their tumultuous times. \n
