SUMMARY:The Price of Half-freedom: Manuel de Gerrit de Reus; Enslaved\, Condemned\, Pardoned & Freed
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Price of Half-Freedom is the story of the first free Black residents in what was to become New York and the events that led to their emancipation: a murder\, a trial\, and a failed execution. This story exemplifies the kind of Black solidarity and Black resistance worthy of our memorialization. \nThe Price of Half-freedom will be exhibited September 15 – December 22\, 2022 at the Shirley Fiterman Art Center located at 81 Barclay St.\, New York\, NY 10017. Fiterman Art Center is open Wednesday – Friday\, 12-5 PM. \nArtist Jean-Marc Superville Sovak is  a friend of Underground Railroad Education Center. Support his efforts to carry forward the empowering stories of our communal ancestors who were agents of change and models for us today. \nClick HERE for more information.

SUMMARY:UREC Reads - The Dawning of the Apocalypse - will resume January 13\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Rather than starting a new book in the busy month of December\, and in order to give everyone time to locate a copy of The Dawning of the Apocalypse\, it was decided that we will resume UREC Reads on the 2nd Friday of January which is January 13\, 2023. We will continue with the hybrid format. Please read below for information about the book and about where copies can be accessed. See you in January! \nSummary: \nIn retelling the bloodthirsty story of the invasion of the Americas\, Horne recounts how the fierce resistance by Africans and their Indigenous allies weakened Spain and enabled London to dispatch settlers to Virginia in 1607.\n\n  \nJoin with others for this hybrid conversation about The Dawning of the Apocalypse by Gerald Horne. UREC Reads participants read 1-2 chapters each month and then gather electronically for an informal conversation about chapter content. An email is sent with a Zoom link on a monthly basis to all who indicate interest in UREC Reads. If you are interested in participating in UREC Reads\, please send word via the UREC Contact page so that your email can be included on the UREC Reads email list. \nQuestions? Comments? Give us a call at 518-621-7793 or send a note via the Contact page on the UREC website. \nCopies of The Dawning of the Apocalypse are available for purchase at ABE Books for $17 + S/H. SUMMARY:Colonie Seniors to Visit the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence
DESCRIPTION:Colonie\, NY seniors will visit The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence for a tour experience. The Myers Residence is an outstanding artifact of the Anti-slavery and Underground Railroad period. \nThe Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence\, located at 194 Livingston Avenue in Albany\, New York reflects Underground Railroad history from the perspective of Stephen Myers as a man enslaved in NYS and from the perspective of Black abolitionists. Stephen and Harriet Myers\, who lived in this building in the mid-1850’s\, were the central Underground Railroad activists in the Capital Region. \nA rich treasure in our backyards. \n
