SUMMARY:BARBECUE
DESCRIPTION:BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara\nBlack Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York (BTTUNY) kicks off their 2021-22 Season with an outdoor production of BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara. BARBECUE centers around the O’Mallerys\, a dysfunctional group of siblings who come together for a park barbeque in order to stage an emergency intervention for their sister Barbara\, whose drug habit has gotten out of hand.\nBARBECUE will take place at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence at 194 Livingston Ave. with performances on August 20-22 and 27-29 at 6pm. Seating will be under a tent in the backyard of The Myers Residence. Street parking is on Livingston Avenue and on Third Street. \n“At first\, “Barbecue” appears to be a whiteface take on O’Hara’s usual themes\, but then\, about fifteen minutes into the show\, he flips the dramaturgical switch. As Lillie Anne\, howling\, tries to get everyone onto her intervention fantasy train—it’s one way to keep her siblings together—the lights go down. Before long\, they come up again\, and we are watching the same family dressed in the same way on the same set\, but now they’re black…” (The New Yorker\, Hilton Als). Read the full review at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/10/26/talking-trash-the-theatre-hilton-als \n  \nTickets available at https://capitalrep.org/event/barbecue/?doing_wp_cron=1624023495.7230410575866699218750

SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - "When you lift from the bottom\, everybody rises": The moral and material necessity of ending poverty
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 has accelerated the decades-long trend of wealth accumulating at the top\, while more and more Americans fall into poverty. The time is now to enact a bold policy agenda that doesn’t just alleviate poverty\, but ends it. Rev. McNeill will discuss the impact of poverty in the Capital Region and New York State and how efforts like the Poor People’s Campaign are organizing in response.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 \nRev. E. West McNeill\, Executive Director of Labor-Religion Coalition\, is originally from Fairport\, NY. West joined Labor-Religion Coalition in 2014 as Lead Organizer. West is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. They hold an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City\, where they were a Fellow with the Kairos Center\, a national network of grassroots and religious leaders organizing to end poverty. Prior to joining LRC\, West was pastor of Parkland United Methodist Church and associate pastor of First United Methodist Church in Tacoma\, WA. West has also worked with United Methodist Kairos Response\, a denominational network advocating for justice and human rights in Israel/Palestine. They have a B.A. in journalism from Ithaca College. \nhttps://laborreligion.org/\n  \nRev. Phil Grigsby\, originally scheduled to present on this date\, is unable to do so. Rev. McNeill has generously offered to step in to become the scheduled presenter.\n  \n Today’s event is made possible\, in part\, by an Action Grant from Humanities New York. Humanities New York  encourages critical thinking and cultural understanding in the public arena through grants\, programs\, networking and advocacy. Visit humanitiesny.org to learn more.
