But both were met by ferocious reactionary measures that severely curtailed\, and in many cases rolled back\, racial and economic progress. This Third Reconstruction is a profoundly moral awakening of justice-loving people united in a fusion coalition powerful enough to reclaim the possibility of democracy—even in the face of corporate-financed extremism . . .  Click HERE to read more. \n  \nAbout the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival\nIn 1968\, Rev. SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - Racist Violence is as American as Cherry Pie
DESCRIPTION:SNCC chair H. Rap Brown was excoriated after a July 1967 press conference where he told reporters: “I say violence is necessary. Violence is a part of America’s culture. It is as American as cherry pie. Americans taught the black people to be violent. We will use that violence to rid ourselves of oppression if necessary. We will be free\, by any means necessary.”\nFollowing the attack by Trump supporters on the U.S. Capitol\, Joe Biden issued a statement that “The scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect a true America\, do not represent who we are.” While some Republicans in Congress accused the Democrats and Black Lives Matter movement of normalizing violence and rioting\, other elected officials from both political parties\, including Donald Trump\, echoed Biden’s remarks. Unfortunately\, H. Rap Brown was right. Violence\, especially racist violence directed at African Americans is as “American as cherry pie.”\n  \n\n\nAlan Singer\, PhD\, is a professor of Teaching\, Learning and Technology and the director of social studies education programs at Hofstra University\, Hempstead\, New York. Dr. Singer is a former New York City high school social studies teacher and editor of Social Science Docket\, a joint publication of the New York and New Jersey Councils for the Social Studies. He is the author of Teaching Global History (Routledge\, 2011)\, New York and Slavery: Time to Teach the Truth (SUNY Press\, Excelsior Editions\, 2008)\, Education Flashpoints\, Fighting for America’s Schools (Routledge 2014)\, Social Studies for Secondary Schools (Routledge\, 4th edition\, 20015)\, New York’s Grand Emancipation Jubilee (SUNY Press\, 2018) and editor of a 268-page secondary school curriculum guide\, New York and Slavery: Complicity and Resistance. In 2011\, the Long Island Conference for the Social Studies awarded Dr. Singer the Mark Rothman Teacher Mentoring Award for his commitment to students and continued excellence in education. He received his Masters and Doctoral degrees from Rutgers University. \nFollow Alan Singer on Facebook\, Twitter and at Daily Kos (https://www.dailykos.com/blog/alan%20singer) \n  \n Today’s event is made possible\, in part\, by an Action Grant from Humanities New York. SUMMARY:African American Marbleization - An Act of Civil Disobedience
DESCRIPTION:African American Marbleization is a series of sculptures by Yvonne Shortt. It is her response to oppression and racisms of African Americans in art\, history\, and her country. It draws on her personal experience of being a woman of color and her desire to use education\, communication\, research\, and art to further conversation and  action. Shortt portrays everyday people of color and objects used primarily by people of color who are at war with a social\, economic\, and political system that has  undervalued their labor and bodies since the formation of the U.S.A. Through research of the objects\, community conversations\, and redesign the objects take on  new/enhanced forms and meanings. \nA pond installation built with the local community to install sculptures above and under the water of the pond. The sculptures are designed based on everyday artifacts from the time of Myers. It aims to commemorate all the everyday people who each took part in the Underground Railroad movement\, and the importance of how we choose to  live our everyday life to create change. \nSculptures\nA couple of pieces installed above water will be modeled after the pieces of furniture in the Underground Railroad Education Center such as the woodstove in the parlor. We will work with the community members and have them create pieces in the water. The design of these pieces will be based on the everyday life artifacts found through the Center’s archeology program. The above-water sculptures will be visible from the sidewalk and attract viewers\, and as they approach the pond they will see more objects underwater which will create a more intimate experience with the installation. \n  \nCommunity members are welcome to participate in building the sculpture under Yvonne’s direction. Interested? Call Mary Liz Stewart at 518-621-7793 or email via the Contact Us page. Leave a message and Mary Liz will call you back with details. Please plan to commit to participating 9am-12pm from July 26 through July 30.
