SUMMARY:LibertyCon 2021 -- Dr. Dorothy L. Brown and the Politics of Adoption and Abortion\, 1950 to 1968
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, Dr. Dorothy L. Brown became the first single woman in Tennessee to legally adopt a child. This accomplishment was one of many firsts that Dr. Brown achieved in her storied life. Once a ward of the Troy Orphan Asylum in Troy\, NY\, Brown was a leader in medicine and politics who authored a failed abortion law during her time as the first African-American Representative in the Tennessee General Assembly. This presentation explores the context in which Dr. Brown lived and worked\, the ways that her early life and work informed her involvement in adoption and abortion reform efforts in the decades before Roe v. Wade\, and the relevance of her work for us today.\n  \n \nDr. Kori A. Graves\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of History at the State University of New York at Albany. A graduate of the Program in Gender and Women’s History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, Dr. Graves’ research evaluates the significance of political and popular representations of gender\, race\, nation\, and family. Her book\, A War Born Family: African American Adoption in the Wake of the Korean War tells the story of the first African Americans who adopted Korean children\, and the ways their efforts revealed the contested nature of adoptive family formation across racial and national lines in the Cold War era. Dr. Graves is also a dedicated instructor. She has won awards for teaching excellence for her courses that explore gender and women’s history\, the history of marriage and family\, and histories of the body\, beauty and identity politics in the U.S.

The Kidnapping Club was a network of judges\, lawyers\, police officers and bankers who sanctioned the kidnapping of free Black men\, women and children in New York City who were then sold into markets in the southern states\, South America\, and the Caribbean for vast sums of wealth.\n  \n \nJonathan Daniel Wells\, PhD\, is a prize-winning historian whose most recent book\, The Kidnapping Club\, tells of the intersections among Wall Street\, slavery\, and resistance to the illicit slave trade in New York City just before the Civil War. DESCRIPTION:The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of enslavement in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Yours for the Oppressed\, Harriet Myers features pieces chosen by our museum’s Special Collections curator in honor of Black  Women’s contributions to social justice in America. The exhibition centers around an 1860 letter written by Harriet Myers to white abolitionist John Jay II which is graciously on loan from the John Jay Homestead in Katonah\, NY. \nOther works on display are publications edited and co-written by Harriet and Stephen\, as well as examples of Black abolitionist embroidery\, and artwork highlighting the continuation of the movement. We are excited to share with you not only the life of Harriet Myers\, but how her activist legacy continues to this day\, exemplified by five local Black women: Didi Delgado\, Jamaica Miles\, Leah Pennimen\, Barbara Smith\, and Tabetha Wilson. \nHarriet’s handwritten one-page letter is a treasure trove of information about UGRR activism\, the role of female abolitionists\, and the political climate of the 1860’s in the Capital Region. \nA gem to behold\, following the grand opening this letter will be on display during public visiting hours of 5pm-8pm Mondays-Fridays and 12pm-4pm Saturdays. \nMasks covering nose and mouth will be required when inside The Myers Residence if you have not been fully vaccinated. Tucked in a corner of the Dr. Thomas Elkins lot\, this garden was originally reclaimed from a debris strewn\, overgrown corner of The Elkins lot and designed by a group of teens who were part of The Young Abolitionist Teen Scholars’ Institute five years ago. Groundhogs\, ground freezing and thawing\, weather\, and animal activity have taken a toll on this lovely space. \nYour help for any portion of the four hours the teens will be working to revitalize this garden space would be greatly appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Members of The Capital District Humanist Society will join with Paul and Mary Liz Stewart for an in-person two hour tour experience at The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence to learn about the involvement of Albany’s Black activists in the Underground Railroad movement and the contemporary relevance of that activism with us today. \n  \nTour Experience Description – ‘Meet’ local Black Abolitionists and Freedom Seekers whose voices have been reclaimed as part of the Underground Railroad narrative. Enjoy a hands-on experience with period artifacts. Analyze period documents which relate an account different from the standard Underground Railroad narrative. Step back in time with period attire. Explore how the Underground Railroad movement relates to our justice concerns for today and how many of the issues faced by abolitionists and freedom seekers are still with us today.  \nTime – 1pm-3pm\n\nCost per person – $15\n\nRain Date – bring an umbrella/raincoat as we will spend some of the tour time outside on The Myers Residence Campus\n\nCOVID protocols – masks at all times / social distancing / sign in on a paper form that confirms one is safely healthy and which provides contact information if needed – UREC pen used to complete form goes with guest  / hand sanitizer available to be used before tour begins and throughout tour as desired /\n\nAccessibility – there is a lift at the back entrance to The Myers Residence and 8 stairs to the front entrance / there are interior stairs to the 2nd and 3rd floors

SUMMARY:Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Leadership Institute\, as a service-learning program\, is designed for 20 teens and is conducted across an 80-hour\, four-week period that runs through July and August 2020. Small groups of teens work with professionals in Focus Groups learning and applying real world research and analysis and planning skills to a collaboratively agreed upon focus\, which is a justice concern of interest to the group of teens and appropriate to the profession represented by the Focus Group Facilitator. Integrated into the experience is the learning and improving of work readiness skills\, leadership and collaboration skills\, skills of planning and implementing and evaluating an action plan and its outcomes\, as well as learning the history related to local historic Underground Railroad activists and their relationship with us today\, and learning how to be civically responsible members of the community. \nEach teen Focus Group is expected to produce a Legacy Project\, left behind for others to be educated and enriched\, which exhibits what the teens have learned\, and which invites others to engage with in some interactive fashion. Enrichment modules are integrated into the program which focus on college preparedness\, financial literacy\, entrepreneurship and healthy lifestyle choices. \nInforming the Leadership Institute design and experience is the work of Howard Gardner who is an American developmental psychologist and the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Research Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education at Harvard University and who is credited with formulation of the Theory of Multiple intelligences. Gardner states\, “We should spend less time ranking children and more time helping them to identify their natural competencies and gifts and cultivate these. There are hundreds and hundreds of ways to succeed and many\, many different abilities that will help you get there.”  (2016) \nCOVID safety protocols are practiced daily so as to keep everyone safe.

DESCRIPTION:The pioneering work in the study of the role of Black Americans during Reconstruction by the most influential Black intellectual of his time. \nThis pioneering work was the first full-length study of the role black Americans played in the crucial period after the Civil War\, when those enslaved had been freed and the attempt was made to reconstruct American society. Hailed at the time\, Black Reconstruction in America 1860–1880 has justly been called a classic. \nFrom webdubois.org- “Du Bois published Black Reconstruction (BR) in 1935 with Harcourt\, Brace and Company (New York). He completed it after leaving the NAACP and returning to Atlanta University. Its subtitle\, “An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America\, 1860-1880\,” neatly summarized his central argument in the book. Accordingly\, Black Reconstruction foregrounds several recurring Du Boisian themes: the role of African American agency in the building of the U.S.A. and the significance of promoting African American equality and freedom in order to achieve the promise of democracy. The book directly challenged dominant views of the time that the Reconstruction era in American history was a disaster for the South and for the country.
