SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 -  Building Community through Free Black Migration before the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:The scholarship on the Underground Railroad movement and the Great Migration is vast but little attention has been paid to the voluntary migratory patterns of free black Americans before the Civil War. Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will shine light on the importance of studying the antebellum migratory patterns of free Black Americans in the tri-city area of New York State and use this data to explain the benefits this migration had on black community development past and present.\n  \n \nJennifer Burns\, PhD\, is a professor of history in the Africana Studies Department at The State University of New York at Albany. Her concentration is in American history and with the story of Black Citizens of Troy\, New York and their work in abolition prior to the American Civil War. Professor Burns is a commentator on WAMC’s Round Table Program\, is a board member of Underground Railroad Education Center and The Hart Cluett Museum\, and is active in curriculum development and community education. She has received her Masters and Doctoral degrees from the State University of New York at Albany. Dr. Burns has presented at numerous community events and conference\, received numerous awards\, and has contributed to Civil War Slave Database in Virginia (2011-2012)\, and Slavery By Another Name (2012). \n Today’s event is made possible\, in part\, by an Action Grant from Humanities New York. DESCRIPTION:“‘We took to ourselves liberty”: Historic Sites Relating to the Underground Railroad\, Abolitionism\, and African American Life in Oneida County and Beyond.” The Underground Railroad was one of America’s monumental stories\,  a multi-racial civil rights movement of epic proportions. Before the Civil War\, as many as 100\,000 people escaped from slavery\, some alone and some with help from allies of African\, European\, and Native descent. As a major transportation hub\, Oneida County became a center of this national movement. Most freedom seekers went through Oneida County to Canada. Many also settled here. DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, the Historic Preservation Fund will fund more than $150 million in projects to assist communities with historic preservation and conservation projects. On Wednesday\, November 4 at 4:30pm EDT\, the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program will host National Park Service Grants Management Specialist Seth Tinkham to learn more about the different funding opportunities available to support physical preservation work to buildings and sites\, nomination of resources to the National Register\, and preservation planning efforts.\nThe National Park Service’s State\, Tribal\, Local\, Plans & Grants Division provides financial and technical assistance throughout the United States. In this webinar\, we will discuss the various grant programs\, types of projects funded\, total dollars currently available\, and eligible applicants. You will also learn how to find the grant application and things to consider before applying. At the end of the presentation\, there will be an open Question and Answer period. DESCRIPTION:Du Bois\, an incredible thinker and author who pushes beyond the limits of the American narrative with his challenging observations and interpretations\, challenges and enriches the reader’s understanding of Reconstruction. A must read and a great source of stimulating conversation. \nPlease bring questions and comments to this conversation. \nDu Bois published Black Reconstruction (BR) in 1935 with Harcourt\, Brace and Company (New York). He completed it after leaving the NAACP and returning to Atlanta University. Its subtitle\, “An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America\, 1860-1880\,” neatly summarized his central argument in the book. Accordingly\, Black Reconstruction foregrounds several recurring Du Boisian themes: the role of African American agency in the building of the U.S.A. and the significance of promoting African American equality and freedom in order to achieve the promise of democracy. The book directly chal­lenged dominant views of the time that the Reconstruction era in American history was a disaster for the South and for the country. DESCRIPTION:The Daniel Stewart Memorial Fund Early Career photography award of Underground Railroad Education Center announces its award recipients for 2022.\nAward recipients for 2022 include Jahniah Kum\, Nikolai Roschko and Laura Kordowski. Jahniah Kum will receive the top prize but awards will also be made to Nicholas Roschko and Laura Kordowski.\n  \nThe Daniel Stewart Memorial Fund was founded in 2020 to honor the memory of Daniel Stewart\, a Capital Region photographer\, who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in Forest Grove\, Oregon in that year. The fund is supported by community member contributions and seeks to support developing self-taught photographers who aspire to grow their careers. DONATE HERE to support next year’s early career photographers. \n  \nApplicants were asked to submit photographs\, a written statement and participate in an interview with the review committee. Judges included volunteers from the Underground Railroad Education Center board\, community volunteers and area photographers. \n  \nThe Early Career Photography Award will be presented on Sunday\, January 30th\, from 2:00 P.M. – 4:00  P.M. The event will be held in the second floor conference room of the Albany Center for Economic Success located at 255 Orange Street\, Albany\, New York 12210. Attendance space is limited due to COVID restrictions. Those in attendance should conform to New York State Department of Health Covid Protocols. The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of slavery in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. \nJoin with the Stewarts as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center is engaged as it works to connect the public with this local history and its relevancy for us today.

This is an in-person and virtual presentation. Visit FreedomCon 2022 for details on our full weekend of events. \nRegister \n\nLocked In and Left Out: Ota Benga\, the Diversity Industry and the Power of Portrayals\nPamela Newkirk\, PhD\, is an author\, award-winning journalist\, professor and scholar whose work presents multidimensional portraits of African American life across the full spectrum of U.S. history.  Her FreedomCon 2022 presentation will primarily draw upon two of her best-selling books: Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga (HarperCollins\, 2015) traces the deeply troubling tale of Ota Benga’s journey from the Congo to the United States\, where he was exhibited at the St. Louis World’s Fair and in 1906 in the Bronx Zoo Monkey House. The book received the 2016 NAACP Image Award and was listed among the Best Books of 2015 by NPR\, The Boston Globe and The San Francisco Chronicle. Diversity Inc.: The Failed Promise of a Billion-Dollar Business (Bold Type Books.\, 2019) examines how workplace diversity initiatives have turned into a profoundly misguided industry – and have done little to bring equality to American institutions and industries. Diversity\, Inc. was included on Time Magazine’s 2019 list of Must-Read Books. Prior to joining the NYU faculty\, Pamela was a daily news reporter at four news organizations\, including the Albany Knickerbocker News and New York Newsday where she was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team. Her articles on race\, media and African American culture have been widely published\, including in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, and Time magazine. \nPamela is a native New Yorker who as a child was surrounded by the ephemera of African American life — the posters\, letters\, books and photographs — collected by her father. DESCRIPTION:Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute\, one of UREC’s signature initiatives\, will gather together Focus Group Facilitators for their in-person orientation at The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence on Wednesday\, June 8 at 5:30pm. Format and curriculum expectations will be explained and plans for Focus Groups and Enrichment experiences will be detailed. \nWe’re off and running with year 13 of  the Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute – transforming lives and empowering our youth!
