SUMMARY:People of Courage\, People of Hope\,Seekers of Justice: the UGRR Revisited
DESCRIPTION:The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language\, and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of enslavement in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with presenters Paul and Mary Liz Stewart\, independent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center is engaged as it works to connect the public with this empowering local history and its relevance for us today. \nThis presentation is prepared for AARP members and guests age 50+ who have an interest in/want to learn more about the Underground Railroad movement. \nVisit AARP’s virtual community calendar: https://local.aarp.org/virtual-community-center/ \nSee you on February 14!

SUMMARY:Albany's Underground Railroad and Faith Communities in Action
DESCRIPTION:Join with Paul Stewart and congregants of Westminster Presbyterian Church on Sunday\, February 11 for a sermon\, “Albany’s Underground Railroad and Faith Communities in Action” to be delivered by Paul Stewart at the 10am service. \nFaith communities were as conflicted as the nation in the antebellum period of American history. Some supported the institution of slavery\, others supported its abolition\, still others were unsure of their position. Some denominations split over their differences. Some chose to dedicate their energies to work to eliminate the stranglehold of this system of inhuman bondage\, acknowledging their calling to ensure that the good news message of equality and justice applied to all. Join with Paul Stewart at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Sunday\, February 11 to hear more about the work of those faith communities who chose to work for justice and equity in their tumultuous times. \n

SUMMARY:You are Invited to Excelsior University's 2024 Celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day
DESCRIPTION:Join this year’s MLK Day celebration. On January 16 at 1PM EST Excelsior University will host Darrell Goodwin for a virtual keynote on “Shifting our cultural climate through our co-construction of community”\, followed by a comments and questions session. Please join us and register HERE.\n\nRev. Darrell L. Goodwin\, a Chicago native\, brings vast experience in higher education\, including several positions in Jesuit colleges and universities\, including Assistant Director of Student Life for Judicial Affairs\, Associate Director of Multicultural Affairs\, Acting Director of Multicultural Affairs\, Assistant Dean of Students\, Associate Dean of Students\, and Dean of Students. Currently he is the first Executive Conference Minister of the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ. As the chief vision keeper\, he is responsible for guiding the conference and its affiliates to have a positive and lasting impact in our world. \nRev. Goodwin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Theology from Boston College; a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from The University of Vermont; a Master of Arts in Transforming Spirituality from Seattle University; and is currently a doctoral candidate in San Francisco Theological Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program where his dissertation topic is\, ” Praying Through: Using group spiritual direction as a strategy for the retention of African American men in predominately white seminaries in the United Church of Christ (UCC). In his spare time\, he is an avid dinner party host\, an amateur bartender\, and is committed to bridge building. \n  \n\n  \nMartin Luther King Jr. (MLK) was a civil rights activist who advocated for nonviolent methods to achieve social change and civil rights for African Americans\, famously using nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. MLK sought equality and justice\, and his speeches and leadership helped shape the civil rights movement. \nAt his renowned “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington in 1963\, about 250\,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington\, D.C. to demand the end of segregation and fair wages\, economic justice\, voting rights\, education and civil rights protections. During his speech\, MLK talked about his dream of a country without segregation and racism. \nMLK received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. In the U.S.\, his birthday is now the MLK Day federal holiday\, which celebrates MLK’s life and legacy and is usually observed with rallies\, marches and speeches by civil rights leaders. As part of MLK Day\, people are encouraged to “reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. King\,” according to the Congress of Racial Equality. \nThe 2024 theme for MLK Day is “Shifting the cultural climate through the study and practice of Kingian Nonviolence\, a sustainable solution to injustice and violence in the world\,” according to The King Center. Kingian Nonviolence is a practice derived from MLK’s philosophy and methodology of individuals and communities learning to work on areas of conflict without resorting to violence.

SUMMARY:“Empowering History through Music: "Lost Voices: Digital Griot" Listening Party at Underground Railroad Education Center”
DESCRIPTION:About the Album: \n“Lost Voices: Digital Griot” is not just an album; it is a sonic journey that weaves together history\, culture\, and social consciousness. The album\, curated by Nicholas Payton\, pays homage to the cornerstone of the West African Oral Tradition. They functioned as poets\, storytellers\, and musicians that told “the story” across generations. Payton uses today’s technologies to create this unique sound using AI. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nNicholas “Nick Slay” Payton – not to be confused with the Jazz Legend “Nicholas Payton” also hails from the birthplace of Jazz\, New Orleans. Learning how his grandfather hustled to feed his family inspired his own “hustler’s spirit” and unlocked his own gift for gab to talk his way into the entertainment industry. The Griot or traveling storyteller\, is at the cornerstone of the West African Oral Tradition. They functioned as poets\, storytellers\, and musicians that told “the story” across generations. Fast forward to the 21st Century\, Black American Music (as so called by that same Jazz Legend Nicholas Payton) has touched and transformed music anywhere Africans and descendants took a melanated step. \nThis is a free event. Light refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:House Party fundraiser for the Interpretive Center
DESCRIPTION:Join with others at a house party hosted by Lisbeth Calandrino\, Board Member and supporter of UREC\, to be held across the street from her home at Israel AME Church\, 381 Hamilton Street in Albany. Founded in 1828 in Albany\, Israel is the oldest Black church in Upstate New York. It was also a station on the Underground Railroad. \nA house party is an opportunity for supporters to gather\, share food and drink and pleasant conversation\, and learn more about the Interpretive Center of Underground Railroad Education Center\, and make a financial commitment in support of this project that is rising up from a dream proffered by the UREC Board of Directors back in 2008 when it was apparent that the work of UREC would not be able to be contained within the walls of The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence. \nWorking with architect Shawn Hamlin of Hamlin Design Group\, supported by funds from our state assembly and senate representatives\, the dream is becoming a reality. Come spend a couple of hours in pleasant company in support of this monumental step being taken by UREC. \nPlease call Mary Liz Stewart at 518-621-7793 to let her know of your intended attendance. Please leave a message if she is not in. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Placement of New Roots Academy Sign
DESCRIPTION:Join students\, families\, faculty\, staff\, administration\, friends\, community members in the celebration of the renaming of Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy to Roots Academy of West Hill. \nThe rationale that was submitted along with the name by the Young Abolitionists Leadership Institute (YALI) is explained in the following: \n“The motto of the Roots Academy should be\, “We are the foundation of education.” The Roots Academy will provide a strong educational foundation which will be the springboard to success in all that students endeavor to do after they leave. Roots Academy recognizes that the trunk of a tree won’t grow strong enough to support the branches if the roots are not healthy\, nurtured and well-developed.” \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:DECEMBER DASH 2023 - join your donation with others as we dash faster and higher than last year
DESCRIPTION:Together let’s dash faster and higher than we did in 2022! Join your contribution with the contribution of others in support of a more equitable and just society made possible through the work of UREC – Donate today and throughout this Giving Season to UREC as we link yesterday with today\, working together to build a better tomorrow. \nYour contribution will support the transforming work of UREC as we prepare our teens to be leaders for tomorrow\, as we educate to bring about equity and justice in our world\, as we preserve and celebrate the voices and spaces of those written out of the American Narrative\, and as we engage the past with our present and look to the future with justice as our standard. \nTogether\, in 2022\, $45\,000 was donated across month of December. Can we reach $50\,000 this year? Yes\, together we can! \nDonations can be postal mailed to Underground Railroad Education Center\, 194 Livingston Avenue\, Albany\, NY 12210 or made online via credit card or PayPal on the UREC donate page at https://undergroundrailroadhistory.org/donate/  \nInterested in Planned Giving? Please call Mary Liz Stewart at 518-621-7793 to discuss. \nAbout Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute – “My confidence in myself and being around others has increased\, I am more comfortable speaking my mind\, I am less tense around others. I like learning what is not taught in school\, I likes the field trips which have increased my awareness of the world around me and introduced me to places I did not know existed right in my community. I would like to see YALI be statewide.” (Mahjae) \nAbout The Myers Residence – “This is an awe-inspiring place\, this is an inspiration to all mankind to remember. All people are equal and worth everything.” (Anon) \nAbout FreedomCon – “I learned a lot from FreedomCon 2022 and was impressed by all the knowledge people held. I will continue to follow UREC’s events and look into local involvement for change in my community.” (PP) FreedomCon 2024 is on the horizon. Stay tuned for more information as we enter the new year. \nAbout the gardens on The Myers Residence Campus grounds – “The gardens are beautiful! And they bring beauty back to the neighborhood that has been challenged by redlining\, urban renewal and disinvestment.” (JR) \nAbout the UREC Library – “The library as it currently resides in the 2nd floor of The Myers Residence is an incredible resource for people of all ages. Add to that the Delve in the Shelves YouTube program available on the UREC YouTube page and I can’t help but get excited. I look forward to when the library will be relocated to the up and coming Interpretive Center so that not only will we have access to such a rich and extensive collection of book resources reflecting African American history and culture\, but we will also have access to a bank of computer that I know I will use to investigate my family genealogy.” (MP) \nAbout July 4th Oration – “I can’t say enough about this rich community opportunity to take a hard look at July 4th and what it means and what it could mean. It’s wonderful to gather with like-minded people to commemorate the freedom fighters past to present\, to be inspired to carry on in the work for justice\, and to know that I walk in the company of many wonderful and committed people.” (AH) \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Freedom Seeker's Experience Through NYS
DESCRIPTION:Join Saladin Allah of Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center\, Mary Liz and Paul Stewart of Underground Railroad Education Center in Albany\, NY\, and Charlotte Jackson of The Bowne House Historical Society in Queens\, NY for a virtual conversation about the Freedom Seeker’s experience in New York State. \nNew York State\, cast as a safe haven in the traditional retelling of Underground Railroad history\, was a far cry from being a sanctuary for Freedom Seekers. State laws\, deep rooted financial connections to enslaving states\, and a history of pro-slavery sentiment among NYS residents set the stage for dangerous conditions for Freedom Seekers. And yet\, many Black and White abolitionists broke state and federal laws as the assisted Freedom Seekers in their journeys. \nThis program is free\, but registration is required in order to receive the zoom link to join in.
