SUMMARY:A New Interpretation of an Old Story presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join Paul and Mary Liz Stewart at the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak\, New York for a presentation on their seminal Underground Railroad research. \nThe Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language\, and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of enslavement in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with Paul and Mary Liz Stewart\, independent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center is engaged as it works to connect the public with this empowering local history and its relevance for us today.

SUMMARY:Pinkster at Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:Join with UREC on Saturday\, June 3\, 2023 from 11AM–4PM at Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site for Pinkster\, a celebration of family\, hope\, and cultural identity. With roots dating to New York’s Dutch colonial period\, this modern Pinkster festival is a way to recognize the importance of African cultural influences on music\, dance\, and identity during New York’s colonial and early American period. Pinkster is free and open to the public. The family-friendly festivities will feature musical performances by Yorkie Nelson from Ghana and The Pinkster Players\, plus participatory dance\, live music\, fabric stamping\, and food. In addition\, there will be open house style tours of Schuyler Mansion and a special exhibition. Historically\, Pinkster was an event that was shaped and developed over the 18th century by the cultural traditions brought to the Hudson River Valley by people from West and Central Africa and their descendants\, who were enslaved by colonists. The holiday- which was originally a Dutch religious observance – evolved into a spring festival at which time enslaved men and women reunited with friends and loved ones to form their own new traditions in storytelling\, music\, dance\, food – and the coveted selection of the Pinkster King.

SUMMARY:The UGGR 9 Bicyclists stopping at The Myers Residence
DESCRIPTION:Having left Cambridge\, Maryland on July 23rd\, nine African American bicyclists will arrive in Albany at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence on July 27th at about 1pm. They are following the trail of the Underground Railroad and will stop at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence Historic Site as part of their journey. They expect to finish their route at Owen Sound\, Ontario\, Canada\, known to be one of the farthest points of settlement for freedom seeking passengers on the Underground Railroad. \n  \n“Our hearts brim with excitement\, adoration\, and are completely thrilled as we retrace the awe-inspiring footsteps of Harriet Tubman\, immersing ourselves in her extraordinary journey towards freedom\,” expressed Alex Williams\, one of the nine cyclists. “Through our own pilgrimage\, we aim to inspire and raise awareness of Harriet Tubman’s profound enduring legacy and emphasize the timeless significant quest of freedom for all humankind.” \n  \nAlong the fabled UGRR\, the nine cyclists have meticulously planned visits to important historical sites and landmarks of profound significance in the lives of freedom seekers and activists with special focus on the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman. With such focus\, the cyclists will travel through Denton (MD)\, Dover\, Middletown\, and Newark (DE)\, Kenneth Square\, Philadelphia\, and Camden (PA)\, Trenton\, Princeton\, and Newark (NJ)\, New York City (including Harlem)\, Poughkeepsie\, Albany\, Schenectady\, Auburn\, Seneca Falls\, Syracuse\, Rochester\, Buffalo\, and Niagara Falls (NY). \n  \nThe Cycling group has dubbed themselves the UGRR Nine. The group is composed of Bobby Dean\, Edward Dunn\, AJ Haney\, John Johnson\, Jerry MaCauley\, Augusto Macedo\, Howard Tyndle\, Ray Wall\, and Alex Williams. All are experienced cyclists united in their reverence for Harriet Tubman and the fight for freedom worldwide. \n  \nThe Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence Historic Site was a key stop on the Underground Railroad. Stephen and Harriet Myers are documented as assisting hundreds of freedom seekers as part of their Underground Railroad activism. The Myers Residence\, operated by Underground Railroad Education Center\, researches and preserves the local and national history of the Underground Railroad movement\, its international connections\, and its legacy to today’s social justice issues\, empowering people of all ages to be agents of change toward an equitable and just society\, offering tours of the site.

SUMMARY:Austerlitz Historical Society - A New Interpretation of an Old Story
DESCRIPTION:Join Paul and Mary Liz Stewart at The Austerlitz Historical Society on sunday\, September 17 at 2pm for a riveting dive into a new interpretation of Underground Railroad history and its relevance for us today. \nIndependent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center\, Paul and Mary Liz Stewart bring their seminal research on the Underground Railroad movement to the public. The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe.  In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of slavery in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with the Stewarts as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center\, Inc. is engaged as it works to connect the public with this local history and its relevance for us today.

SUMMARY:League of Women Voters offers a Panel Presentation with YALI teens n 'What to do with Phil'
DESCRIPTION:Should he stay or should he go? Whether you agree or disagree with the decision to move the Philip Schuyler statue\, save the evening of 9/28 at 7PM to hear from the teens of the 2022 Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute\, a program of the Underground Railroad Education Center\, who investigated this topic and ultimately recommended moving the statue. As noted in their report: “The question about what to do with Phil is not just about the Philip Schuyler statue. It is a question about how does New York State\, and in turn its capital city\, admit to its less than savory past\, own up to its investment in the institution of enslavement\, and work diligently to confront and change the contemporary impact of the legacy of the institution of enslavement.” \nJoin with the League of Women Voters\, Underground Railroad Education Center\, and Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute teens on Thursday\, September 28 at 7pm for a virtual panel presentation and conversation about the Philip Schuyler statue and the teen implemented process that led to its removal from in front of Albany City Hall. \nPlease register for this informative Zoom program. \n

SUMMARY:Passengers On the Underground Railroad – Who are They? What are their Stories?
DESCRIPTION:That we might bring their stories to life\, acknowledge their courage and fortitude\, and embed them in their rightful place in the Underground Railroad story\, Underground Railroad Education Center has developed a list of 135 freedom seekers who came to  the Capital Region of New York State in the years before the Civil War. All we have are their names\, a little bit of their story and often the date when they came to the Capital Region. We want to know more. \nTo this end we have initiated a short-term project with the help of a graduate student researcher who has been tasked with gathering additional information about these freedom seekers and their stories.   \nMaxam Daniels is a BA/MA advanced student at the University at Albany. He was recommended to us through the History Department\, and we have asked him to intern with us for 12.5 weeks to research these stories. As a step in his research and in our exploration of these stories we have asked him to research the 135 freedom seeker accounts collected by UREC. As he does so he will present\, at several junctures\, the research he has completed. The work he does will help us fill out the stories of these 135 people. \nThe third presentation is scheduled for Friday\, September 29th at 7pm – 8:30pm. This will be a hybrid event.  In-person will be held at The Myers Residence located at 194 Livingston Avenue in Albany. Light refreshments will be served. \nJoin us on Friday\, August 25th at the Myers Residence or via Zoom to hear the second of a three-part series on the stories of the courageous freedom seekers who came to Albany on the Underground Railroad. For this event we ask you to consider making a donation of $20 or more to help fund the research costs connected with this effort. Donations will be accepted at the program or via the donation page on the UREC website at https://undergroundrailroadhistory.org/donate/ \n  \nThis will be a hybrid event. Click HERE to register in advance via zoom. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.Technology improvements will be in place to enhance the hybrid experience.  \n  \n
