SUMMARY:A New Interpretation of an Old Story
DESCRIPTION:Mary Liz and Paul Stewart will share via zoom the results of their Underground Railroad research with The Conkling Center in Glens Falls\, NY on Thursday\, February 24 from 2pm-3pm. \nTheir presentation\, “A New Interpretation of an Old Story”\, will address the Underground Railroad\, which is often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language and hidey-holes\, as far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of slavery in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with the Stewarts as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center is engaged as it works to connect the public with this local history and its relevance for us today. \nCLICK HERE for information about The Conkling Center.

SUMMARY:Pamela Newkirk to Provide Opening Address at FreedomCon 2022: Toward Change - Toward Equality
DESCRIPTION:Click FreedomCon Journal to open your online copy of the conference journal\n  \nJoin us Friday evening April 1st as we kick off FreedomCon 2022 with a presentation by Pamela Newkirk. This is an in-person and virtual presentation. Visit FreedomCon 2022 for details on our full weekend of events. \nRegister \n\nLocked In and Left Out: Ota Benga\, the Diversity Industry and the Power of Portrayals\nPamela Newkirk\, PhD\, is an author\, award-winning journalist\, professor and scholar whose work presents multidimensional portraits of African American life across the full spectrum of U.S. history.  Her FreedomCon 2022 presentation will primarily draw upon two of her best-selling books: Spectacle: The Astonishing Life of Ota Benga (HarperCollins\, 2015) traces the deeply troubling tale of Ota Benga’s journey from the Congo to the United States\, where he was exhibited at the St. Louis World’s Fair and in 1906 in the Bronx Zoo Monkey House. The book received the 2016 NAACP Image Award and was listed among the Best Books of 2015 by NPR\, The Boston Globe and The San Francisco Chronicle. Diversity Inc.: The Failed Promise of a Billion-Dollar Business (Bold Type Books.\, 2019) examines how workplace diversity initiatives have turned into a profoundly misguided industry – and have done little to bring equality to American institutions and industries. Diversity\, Inc. was included on Time Magazine’s 2019 list of Must-Read Books. Prior to joining the NYU faculty\, Pamela was a daily news reporter at four news organizations\, including the Albany Knickerbocker News and New York Newsday where she was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team. Her articles on race\, media and African American culture have been widely published\, including in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, The Washington Post\, and Time magazine. \nPamela is a native New Yorker who as a child was surrounded by the ephemera of African American life — the posters\, letters\, books and photographs — collected by her father. Those images became a life-long inspiration for Pamela\, nourishing her scholarly interest in the unexplored history of the African Diaspora and the ways in which racial portrayals shape cultures\, societies\, institutions\, public policies and the lives of individuals. \nShe holds undergraduate and graduate journalism degrees from New York and Columbia universities\, and a PhD in Comparative and International Education from Columbia University. \nVisit https://www.pamelanewkirk.com/ to learn more about Pamela Newkirk and her work.\nClick Here for an Interactive Hudson Valley Community College Map\n\nRemember to check out the FreedomCon Raffle\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Second Annual JuneTEENth Freedom Day Celebration and Open House!
DESCRIPTION:Be our guests at our free event\, planned and presented by the teen participants in our Young Abolitionists Leadership Institute\, for a day of food\, community\, and history at the Residence of local Underground Railroad Abolitionist activists Stephen and Harriet Myers\, located at 194 Livingston Avenue! \n \nWhat is Juneteenth?\nOn June 19\, 1865\, enslaved African-Americans in Galveston\, Texas\, were told they were free\, nearly 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on Jan. 1\, 1863\, by President Abraham Lincoln. \nGordon Granger\, a Union general\, arrived in Galveston\, Texas about two months after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox\, Va.\,to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. \nA century and a half later\, people in cities and towns across the U.S. continue to celebrate the occasion. \nFreedom is in the claiming. The elemental sermon embedded into the history and lore of Juneteenth has always been one of hope. The gifts of the holiday are the moments of connection\, renewal and joy for a people who have had to endure so much\, for so long. To me\, Juneteenth matters because it says: Keep going\, the future you want is coming. -Veronica Chambers \n  \nJoin us for a day of remembrance\, learning\, sharing stories and good food as we celebrate freedom and everything that goes with it.\nWhat’s happening at the event? \n– Enjoy Free Food by Allie B’s Kitchen\n– Take a tour and view historical presentations by teen program participants\n– Relax in our beautiful gardens\n– Shop at our Vendors featuring the work of Black artisans\n– Enjoy face painting and poetry readings\n– Enter to win our Raffle prizes!\n– Ride the FREE CDTA Trolley to a STEAM Garden presentation of Central Avenue Business Improvement District\n– Ride the FREE CDTA Trolley to the Ten Broeck Mansion Juneteenth programming\n– Tour The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence – a documented\, award-winning Underground Railroad site \nWhen: Saturday\, June 18th\, 2022 from 12 pm through 4 pm \nWhere: The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence\, 194 Livingston Ave\, Albany\, NY \nCost: Free (donations gratefully accepted) \nEveryone is welcome to join us at our non-smoking\, alcohol-free property to enjoy the events of the day!

SUMMARY:UREC Reads - Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson - chapters 15-16 + Epilogue
DESCRIPTION:An unforgettable true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us\, and a clarion call to end mass incarceration in America — from one of the most inspiring lawyers of our time.
