The B+P Committee will focus on two major construction projects – the interior restoration of The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence and the building of The Interpretive Center. The two construction projects are in the pre-development stages so setting up a plan of attack along with investigating and selecting options for the pre-development phase and then the construction phase for both projects is just beginning. Join in the fun! \n  \nThe B+P Committee will meet on the first Thursday of each month for 60-90 minutes. SUMMARY:LibertyCon 2021 --- Staten Island’s Freedom Struggles and the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Staten Island\, one of New York City’s five boroughs\, has a rich history that includes free and freedom seeker African Americans. In her research\, Ms. Paige has uncovered significant documentation that has brought this history to light. Weaving historical information with stories collected from first person accounts told by people who came to Staten Island from other places\, we will learn about what they were willing to do to stay\, how they accomplished their desires\, and how this information is related with us today.\n  \n \nDebbie-Ann Paige\, MA\, Adjunct Lecturer\, City University of NY College of Staten Island\, and Genealogist and founder of PAIGE ONE ASSIST\, is a public historian specializing in local African American history\, a co-president of the newly chartered Richard B. Dickenson Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) and professional genealogist. She has worked on numerous local history projects including: In Pursuit of Freedom with the Brooklyn Historical Society; From Farm to City with the Staten Island Museum; the designation of the Louis Napoleon House as a site to freedom with the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network on behalf of the Sandy Ground Historical Society\, and the recent City Council street renaming of the corner of Fairview Avenue and Knox Place as “Samuel A. Browne Way” in the Castleton Hill section of Staten Island. Debbie-Ann has appeared as a historical interpreter on the Emmy winning show “Secrets of New York\,” and is working closely with Frederick Douglass Memorial Park to transcribe their historical records. She facilitates public history forums throughout Staten Island focused on the historical perspectives of race relations and lectures as an adjunct at the College of Staten Island.

Shawna will share documents related to slavery from Cherry Hill’s collections and take a close look at Dinah’s room in order to reconstruct what we can of Dinah’s experience.

The Knapps left an impressive collection of personal letters and belongings at Cherry Hill that tell the story of their struggles for autonomy and their strong ties of kinship. \nDr. Kori Graves will share her research on C. Mary Williams and her family\, African Americans living in Albany from the early 1800s to the end of the century.

DESCRIPTION:In the middle decades of the 18th Century\, the Oblong Meeting at Pawling – along with other Quaker communities – were spreading across eastern Dutchess County and points beyond. The area would go on to boast the largest settlement of Quakers outside of Philadelphia. Almost from the beginning\, these Quakers found themselves at the forefront of the slavery-antislavery debate and the Underground Railroad. SUMMARY:New York and the Illegal Slave Trade During the Civil War Era
DESCRIPTION:New York was the last slaving port in the Americas. Long after Congress banned the trade\, hundreds of ships were leaving the wharfs of Manhattan bound for the African coast. This talk\, drawn from the author’s new book\, The Last Slave Ships (Yale University Press)\, describes who ran the trade and how\, why law enforcement was complicit\, and the reasons why Abraham Lincoln’s Republic Party squashed the trade during the Civil War. \nThe talk is presented through the Hudson River Maritime Museum\, beginning at 7:00 PM via Zoom. SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - Documenting Racially Restrictive Covenants in Washington DC: A Primer
DESCRIPTION:Mara Cherkasky first wrote about racially restrictive covenants in the mid-1990s and has been systematically documenting and mapping them in Washington\, DC since 2014. Reviewing more than 100\,000 property records and thus far finding racially restrictive covenants on more than 20\,000 DC properties\, Ms. Cherkasky will explain what racially restrictive covenants are\, their formulation in public policy\, and their relationship to the development of housing segregation in the District of Columbia. Additionally\, she will describe the process by which she and her collaborators developed a methodology for researching and documenting racial covenants.\n  \n \nMara Cherkasky is a DC-based historian and writer\, and the co-founder in 2014 of both the historical research firm Prologue DC\, LLC\, and the digital public history project Mapping Segregation in Washington DC (www.mappingsegregationdc.org). \nMara has also produced exhibit panels\, books and articles for print and online publications\, multi-media presentations\, and historic site signage for clients such as the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia\, Cultural Tourism DC\, and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation. A meticulous researcher\, she has assisted the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum\, WETA-TV\, the DC Historic Preservation Office\, the Historical Society of Washington\, D.C.\, and many others with projects. She is also as an experienced oral history interviewer and walking tour guide. \nCurrent/recent projects include mapping the ca. 1912 destruction of the African American community on Meridian Hill; developing a 100-site DC African American Civil Rights Tour; and creating a Heritage Trail (signs with text\, maps\, and images) for the Northeast DC neighborhood of Eckington. \nMara holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s degree in American Studies from George Washington University.

DESCRIPTION:Be our guests at our free event\, planned and presented by the teen participants in our Young Abolitionists Leadership Institute\, for a day of food\, community\, and history at the Residence of local Underground Railroad Conductor and active Abolitionists Stephen and Harriet Myers\, located at 194 Livingston Avenue! \nWhat is Juneteenth?\n \nOn June 19\, 1865\, enslaved African-Americans in Galveston\, Texas\, were told they were free\, nearly 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on Jan. 1\, 1863\, by President Abraham Lincoln. \nGordon Granger\, a Union general\, arrived in Galveston\, Texas about two months after the Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox\, Va.\,to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. \nA century and a half later\, people in cities and towns across the U.S. continue to celebrate the occasion. \nFreedom is in the claiming. \nThe elemental sermon embedded into the history and lore of Juneteenth has always been one of hope. SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - African Americans Fighting White Supremacy in the Wake of the Tulsa Massacre
DESCRIPTION:100 years ago\, in the wake of the Tulsa Race Massacre\, wealthy African Americans from Oklahoma joined Little Liberia\, an economic opportunity to improve the lives of African Americans in the U.S. through economic advancement in Mexico. They also created a sister organization\, the International Community Welfare League\, that sought to combat White Supremacy\, which they identified as a main culprit for racial inequality in the U.S and in the hemisphere.\nThis presentation will discuss the Tulsa Massacre\, Little Liberia\, the League\, and consider the role of multiracial organizing with African Americans at the center as a means to combat White Supremacy.\n  \n \nLaura Hooton\, PhD\, is Assistant Professor of American History at The United States Military Academy at West Point. She is interested in race\, ethnicity\, and identity in North America\, especially combining African American history and Black studies with borderlands history. She also studies migration and immigration\, especially from the perspective of comparative race and ethnicity and social movements. Dr. Hooton leads the Black History at West Point project. She also published a module on comparative immigration in the Southwest for West Point. Currently Dr. Hooton is working on two books. Her first monograph tells the history of Little Liberia\, a social movement that began in 1918 as an African American agricultural community in Baja California started by Black Los Angelenos. The movement\, in its ten-year history\, grew into a movement for political\, social and economic change in the United States and Mexico\, including the creation of a sister organization to combat White Supremacy in North America in the wake of the Tulsa Race Massacre. She is co-authoring the revised edition of Almost All Aliens\, a large-scale telling of comparative United States immigration\, race\, and ethnicity history. \n  \nPublications \nLittle Liberia: The Dream of an African American Community in Baja California. Dr. Roxanne Jones Booth grew up in Catskill\, New York. She is the daughter of the late Samuel and Marjorie Jones. She is a three-time graduate of Howard University in Washington\, DC where she received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science\, the Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies\, and the Master of Divinity degree. She is also a graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Hamilton Massachusetts\, having received the Doctor of Ministry degree specializing in Missions and Cross-Cultural Studies. \nRev. Dr. Booth was married to the Reverend Antonio Booth on June 19\, 1999. After seven years\nof marriage\, Rev. Dr. Booth and Rev. Antonio Booth accepted to do missions work with the\nForeign Mission Board (FMB) of the National Baptist Convention USA Inc. and moved to the\nKingdom of Swaziland in May 2006. Before marriage Rev. Dr. Roxanne Jones Booth served four\nyears as a mission worker in the Kingdom of Swaziland and three years in South Africa with the\nForeign Mission Board from 1991-1998. \nIn July 2004\, Rev. Dr. Roxanne Jones Booth planned the Foreign Mission Board’s first HIV/AIDS\nLeadership Empowerment Conference in South Africa. This Conference bought together clergy and\nchurch leaders from National Baptist Churches in Swaziland and South Africa for leadership\ntraining for tackling the spread of HIV/AIDS. At the Conference clergy and church leaders\nreceived relevant information on HIV/AIDS counseling and testing training\, pastoral counseling\nin bereavement and grief as well as information for setting up HIV/AIDS support groups\,\nfeeding programs\, and home-based health care training programs in their churches. \nFrom May 2006 to March 2009\, Rev. Dr. Roxanne Jones Booth was the Foreign Mission Board\nRegional Representative in Swaziland. In Swaziland the mission ministry involved leadership\ndevelopment training with clergy and church leaders of nine National Baptist churches\,\nsupervision of a pre-school and clinic and distribution of scholarships to 75 Swazi students. \nUpon their return to the United States in March 2009\, Rev. Dr. Booth and Rev. Antonio Booth\nserved as Interim Co-Pastors of Riverview Missionary Baptist Church from January 2010 to\nDecember 2010. In March 2011 the two were installed as the permanent Co-Pastors of the\nRiverview Missionary Baptist Church. This is the church were Rev. Dr. Booth was baptized and\nthe church which ordained her for the Gospel ministry. \nCurrently\, Rev. Dr. Booth is an Adjunct Professor at the State University of New York at\nAlbany in the College of Arts and Sciences Africana Studies Department lecturing in\nAfrican/African American Religion. She is also a proud and active life-time member of Delta\nSigma Theta Sorority Inc. and serves as the Dean of the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association Congress of Christian Education. \nTo God be the glory!

SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - Racist Violence is as American as Cherry Pie
DESCRIPTION:SNCC chair H. Rap Brown was excoriated after a July 1967 press conference where he told reporters: “I say violence is necessary. Violence is a part of America’s culture. It is as American as cherry pie. Americans taught the black people to be violent. We will use that violence to rid ourselves of oppression if necessary. We will be free\, by any means necessary.”\nFollowing the attack by Trump supporters on the U.S. Capitol\, Joe Biden issued a statement that “The scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect a true America\, do not represent who we are.” While some Republicans in Congress accused the Democrats and Black Lives Matter movement of normalizing violence and rioting\, other elected officials from both political parties\, including Donald Trump\, echoed Biden’s remarks. Unfortunately\, H. Rap Brown was right. Violence\, especially racist violence directed at African Americans is as “American as cherry pie.”\n  \n\n\nAlan Singer\, PhD\, is a professor of Teaching\, Learning and Technology and the director of social studies education programs at Hofstra University\, Hempstead\, New York. Dr. Singer is a former New York City high school social studies teacher and editor of Social Science Docket\, a joint publication of the New York and New Jersey Councils for the Social Studies. He is the author of Teaching Global History (Routledge\, 2011)\, New York and Slavery: Time to Teach the Truth (SUNY Press\, Excelsior Editions\, 2008)\, Education Flashpoints\, Fighting for America’s Schools (Routledge 2014)\, Social Studies for Secondary Schools (Routledge\, 4th edition\, 20015)\, New York’s Grand Emancipation Jubilee (SUNY Press\, 2018) and editor of a 268-page secondary school curriculum guide\, New York and Slavery: Complicity and Resistance.
