SUMMARY:Headstone for Stephen and Harriet Myers - Unveiling and Reception
DESCRIPTION:While Albany’s Underground Railroad had many vital contributors\, Stephen and Harriet Myers remained its steadfast leaders. Beginning in the early 1840s\, they utilized personal resources and Stephen’s Northern Star Association\, which published his newspaper. Their influence grew significantly\, and by the 1850s\, they had become Albany’s principal Underground Railroad agents. In this role\, they ultimately assisted thousands of people in achieving their freedom. However\, despite their vital contributions to humanity\, Stephen and Harriet Myers were laid to rest without a marker; a historical omission that this event seeks to correct.\nThe headstone for Stephen and Harriet Myers’s gravesite in Albany Rural Cemetery will be unveiled Saturday\, September 20 at Albany Rural Cemetery. A reception to follow will be held at Israel AME Church located at 381 Hamilton Street in Albany.\nRegistration is requested if you plan you attend – Please use the QR code to the left to register \nQuestions? Call 518-621-7793 or use the Contact page on the UREC website.\nMap to Myers gravesite — Click to open a map of the location of the gravesite of Stephen and Harriet Myers where the headstone installation ceremony will take place.

SUMMARY:Arias in the Afternoon: Lifting Every Voice fundraising committee
DESCRIPTION:Join with a lively group of community members in the planning of Arias in the Afternoon:Lifting Every Voice\, with Handel’s Messiah arias and the Smithsonian’s Voices and Votes: Democracy in America exhibit to be the centerpiece of this memorable event. There will be a complementary group singing of he Hallelujah Chorus – listen here to the Soulfull Celebration version. \nThe event’s music draws from the works of George Frideric Handel—celebrated for their beauty\, complexity\, and emotional power. But Handel’s legacy is not unblemished. Historical records show he held financial investments in the Royal African Company\, a major player in the transatlantic slave trade. The very wealth that supported his compositions was\, in part\, built on the trafficking and suffering of enslaved Africans. \nAs we gather to listen to his music at this space\, we do so with full awareness of these contradictions. The Underground Railroad Education Center is committed to telling the whole story—one that includes the roots of injustice alongside the stories of resistance\, survival\, and hope. \nUREC invites planning committee members\, and event guests\, to hold these truths together: the brilliance of the music\, and the reality of its origin. We honor not just the notes on the page\, but the voices of those who were silenced\, and those who fought to be heard. \nIn their memory—and in service of their legacy—we continue the work of education\, truth-telling\, and justice. \n  \nDo you like thinking big? Do you like working with others in a friendly atmosphere? Do you like to plan memorable and distinctive events? Then this is the place to be. \nMonthly meetings are hybrid\, meeting on the 4th Tuesday of each month. In-person participation is encouraged. Meetings start at 4:30pm and finish by 6pm. Refreshments are provided. \nInterested? Contact Mary Liz Stewart at 518-621-7793 or via the Contact Us page on the UREC website. \nIn-person participation is desired\, but a zoom link is provided here for anyone who cannot attend in person – https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86887797433?pwd=KpV9f0bkILbECo4tLMV2rtn6hbWrk4.1

SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2025: Voices of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Authors across time have challenged us to look back at history and learn what we missed\, to relearn what we had not fully understood\, to reexamine in more detail new information\, to consider new interpretations of old stories\, to understand the past and present from new voices uncovered and new voices reclaimed. In their gift for writing authors offer to us words\, feelings\, stories\, descriptions in words captured in print and preserved for generations. Their words become our eyes viewing into another world that compels\, elucidates\, clarifies\, that expands our understandings and our horizons. Their words call us to look and listen again\, and to be changed. Join with UREC as we engage with a selection of authors who gift us with their works of art. \nVirtual workshop presentations via Zoom will be held on the 4th Saturday of each month from 2pm-3pm. Presentations are recorded and made available to registrants for one month after the presentation. Registration cost is $12 per session. Members can include a 10% member discount off the total registration. \nHere’s the lineup – \n(9/27) Conversations in the American Landscape: History\, Place\, and Justice by Katie Wu and Louis P. Nelson\n(10/25) Cinderella of Belvoir: A Dream of Freedom On the Underground Railroad by Dionne Patterson \nComplete Information and Registration is available by clicking HERE

SUMMARY:Seneca Chief - 2025 Bicentennial Voyage: Commemorating the Erie Canal - Celebrating Community at Jennings Landing in Albany\, NY
DESCRIPTION:The Seneca Chief was the canal packet boat that famously carried Governor DeWitt Clinton and dignitaries on the first voyage through the completed Erie Canal in 1825\, an event known as the “Wedding of the Waters”. Upon arrival at New York City water from Lake Erie was poured into the Hudson River resulting in a ‘wedding of the waters’ and pronouncing the Erie Canal open for business. Today\, the Buffalo Maritime Center has built a full-scale\, historically accurate replica of this original Erie Canal boat to commemorate the 2025 Bicentennial of the Erie Canal’s opening. Join with others in celebrating this remarkable achievement\, both that of the past and contemporarily\, by joining in the various community events planned for the Seneca Chief voyage. \nUREC will be tabling at Jennings Landing on Sunday\, October 19 between 11am-4pm. We are excited to particapte with other community organizations in providing educational and interactive experiences at the waterfront. Come learn about Black involvement in bringing the Erie Canal to life\, try your hand at metal forging and pouring pewter\, learn about the canal’s impact on the Indigenous Peoples across whose land the canal was located\, and more. See you on October 19 at Jennings Landing\, Albany! \nFull details\, including ways to provide financial support for this endeavor\, can be accessed by clicking HERE

\nHere’s the lineup – \n(10/25) Cinderella of Belvoir: A Dream of Freedom On the Underground Railroad by Dionne Patterson \nComplete Information and Registration is available by clicking HERE
