DESCRIPTION:Join Paul and Mary Liz Stewart at The Austerlitz Historical Society on sunday\, September 17 at 2pm for a riveting dive into a new interpretation of Underground Railroad history and its relevance for us today. \nIndependent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center\, Paul and Mary Liz Stewart bring their seminal research on the Underground Railroad movement to the public. The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe.  In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of slavery in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with the Stewarts as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center\, Inc. is engaged as it works to connect the public with this local history and its relevance for us today.

As noted in their report: “The question about what to do with Phil is not just about the Philip Schuyler statue. SUMMARY:Passengers On the Underground Railroad – Who are They? What are their Stories?
DESCRIPTION:That we might bring their stories to life\, acknowledge their courage and fortitude\, and embed them in their rightful place in the Underground Railroad story\, Underground Railroad Education Center has developed a list of 135 freedom seekers who came to  the Capital Region of New York State in the years before the Civil War. All we have are their names\, a little bit of their story and often the date when they came to the Capital Region. We want to know more.  \nTo this end we have initiated a short-term project with the help of a graduate student researcher who has been tasked with gathering additional information about these freedom seekers and their stories.   \nMaxam Daniels is a BA/MA advanced student at the University at Albany. He was recommended to us through the History Department\, and we have asked him to intern with us for 12.5 weeks to research these stories. As a step in his research and in our exploration of these stories we have asked him to research the 135 freedom seeker accounts collected by UREC. As he does so he will present\, at several junctures\, the research he has completed. The work he does will help us fill out the stories of these 135 people. \nThe third presentation is scheduled for Friday\, September 29th at 7pm – 8:30pm. This will be a hybrid event.  In-person will be held at The Myers Residence located at 194 Livingston Avenue in Albany. Light refreshments will be served.  \nJoin us on Friday\, August 25th at the Myers Residence or via Zoom to hear the second of a three-part series on the stories of the courageous freedom seekers who came to Albany on the Underground Railroad. For this event we ask you to consider making a donation of $20 or more to help fund the research costs connected with this effort. State laws\, deep rooted financial connections to enslaving states\, and a history of pro-slavery sentiment among NYS residents set the stage for dangerous conditions for Freedom Seekers. DESCRIPTION:Join with others at a house party hosted by Lisbeth Calandrino\, Board Member and supporter of UREC\, to be held across the street from her home at Israel AME Church\, 381 Hamilton Street in Albany. Founded in 1828 in Albany\, Israel is the oldest Black church in Upstate New York. It was also a station on the Underground Railroad. \nA house party is an opportunity for supporters to gather\, share food and drink and pleasant conversation\, and learn more about the Interpretive Center of Underground Railroad Education Center\, and make a financial commitment in support of this project that is rising up from a dream proffered by the UREC Board of Directors back in 2008 when it was apparent that the work of UREC would not be able to be contained within the walls of The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence. \nWorking with architect Shawn Hamlin of Hamlin Design Group\, supported by funds from our state assembly and senate representatives\, the dream is becoming a reality. The album\, curated by Nicholas Payton\, pays homage to the cornerstone of the West African Oral Tradition. They functioned as poets\, storytellers\, and musicians that told “the story” across generations. Payton uses today’s technologies to create this unique sound using AI. \n  \nAbout the artist: \nNicholas “Nick Slay” Payton – not to be confused with the Jazz Legend “Nicholas Payton” also hails from the birthplace of Jazz\, New Orleans. Learning how his grandfather hustled to feed his family inspired his own “hustler’s spirit” and unlocked his own gift for gab to talk his way into the entertainment industry. The Griot or traveling storyteller\, is at the cornerstone of the West African Oral Tradition. They functioned as poets\, storytellers\, and musicians that told “the story” across generations. Fast forward to the 21st Century\, Black American Music (as so called by that same Jazz Legend Nicholas Payton) has touched and transformed music anywhere Africans and descendants took a melanated step. \nThis is a free event. Goodwin\, a Chicago native\, brings vast experience in higher education\, including several positions in Jesuit colleges and universities\, including Assistant Director of Student Life for Judicial Affairs\, Associate Director of Multicultural Affairs\, Acting Director of Multicultural Affairs\, Assistant Dean of Students\, Associate Dean of Students\, and Dean of Students. Currently he is the first Executive Conference Minister of the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ. As the chief vision keeper\, he is responsible for guiding the conference and its affiliates to have a positive and lasting impact in our world. \nRev. Goodwin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Theology from Boston College; a Master of Education in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration from The University of Vermont; a Master of Arts in Transforming Spirituality from Seattle University; and is currently a doctoral candidate in San Francisco Theological Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program where his dissertation topic is\, ” Praying Through: Using group spiritual direction as a strategy for the retention of African American men in predominately white seminaries in the United Church of Christ (UCC). In his spare time\, he is an avid dinner party host\, an amateur bartender\, and is committed to bridge building. \n  \n\n  \nMartin Luther King Jr. (MLK) was a civil rights activist who advocated for nonviolent methods to achieve social change and civil rights for African Americans\, famously using nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. MLK sought equality and justice\, and his speeches and leadership helped shape the civil rights movement. \nAt his renowned “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington in 1963\, about 250\,000 people gathered in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington\, D.C. to demand the end of segregation and fair wages\, economic justice\, voting rights\, education and civil rights protections. During his speech\, MLK talked about his dream of a country without segregation and racism. \nMLK received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. In the U.S.\, his birthday is now the MLK Day federal holiday\, which celebrates MLK’s life and legacy and is usually observed with rallies\, marches and speeches by civil rights leaders. As part of MLK Day\, people are encouraged to “reflect on the principles of racial equality and nonviolent social change espoused by Dr. King\,” according to the Congress of Racial Equality. \nThe 2024 theme for MLK Day is “Shifting the cultural climate through the study and practice of Kingian Nonviolence\, a sustainable solution to injustice and violence in the world\,” according to The King Center. Kingian Nonviolence is a practice derived from MLK’s philosophy and methodology of individuals and communities learning to work on areas of conflict without resorting to violence.
