SUMMARY:Black Authors in the Hudson Valley Book Talk - Janell Hobson and "When God Lost Her Tongue"
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid event via Zoom (link below) and in-person at Professor Java’s Coffee Sanctuary (address below) \nWhen God Lost Her Tongue explores historical consciousness as captured through the Black feminist imagination that re-centers the perspectives of Black women in the African Diaspora\, and revisits how Black women’s transatlantic histories are re-imagined and politicized in our contemporary moment. \nConnecting select historical case studies – from the Caribbean\, the African continent\, North America\, and Europe – while also examining the retelling of these histories in the work of present-day writers and artists\, Janell Hobson utilizes a Black feminist lens to rescue the narratives of African-descended women\, which have been marginalized\, erased\, forgotten\, and/or mis-remembered. African goddesses crossing the Atlantic with captive Africans. Women leaders igniting the Haitian Revolution. Unnamed Black women in European paintings. African women on different sides of the “door of no return” during the era of the transatlantic slave trade. Even ubiquitous “Black queens” heralded and signified in a Beyoncé music video or a Janelle Monáe lyric. And then there are those whose names we will never forget\, like the iconic Harriet Tubman. \nThis critical interdisciplinary intervention will be key reading for students and researchers studying African American women\, Black feminisms\, feminist methodologies\, Africana studies\, and women and gender studies. SUMMARY:Anti-Slavery in Columbia County and the Region
DESCRIPTION:Columbia County was an important and vibrant community in the first half of the 19th century. Temperance\, reform movements and Underground Railroad activity were part of the antebellum period. Numerous freedom seekers\, such as Peter Wheeler pictured here\, made their way to the region\, some to settle\, some to find respite before moving on\, knowing that support was available from abolitionists\, both black and white\, who made the region their home. \nThe Underground Railroad Education Center brings to the public the historically documented accounts of both freedom seekers and abolitionists\, highlighting the leadership roles occupied by African Americans abolitionists\, identifying who they were\, what they did\, where they engaged in their activities as they sought to ensure that the promises of our nation’s Declaration of Independence were available to all. \nThis virtual program is presented by the Underground Railroad Education Center in Albany and Hosted by the Columbia County Libraries Association. \nTo register email: columbiacountylibraries@gmail.com

SUMMARY:“On Freedom Road: Bicycle Explorations and Reckonings on the Underground Railroad” – book talk by author David Goodrich
DESCRIPTION:“Over the course of four years\, I rode my bicycle 3\,000 miles east of the Mississippi to travel the routes of the Underground Railroad and delve into the history and stories in the places where they happened. The traces of the Underground Railroad hide in plain sight: a great church in Philadelphia; a humble old house backing up to the New Jersey Turnpike; an industrial outbuilding in Ohio. I followed the most famous of conductors\, Harriet Tubman\, from where she was enslaved in Maryland\, on the Eastern Shore\, all the way to her family sanctuary at a tiny chapel in Ontario\, Canada. Travelling South\, I rode from New Orleans\, where the enslaved were bought and sold\, through Mississippi and the heart of the Delta Blues. I wandered through the Borderland along the Ohio River\, a kind of no-mans-land between North and South in the years before the Civil War. Here\, slave hunters roamed both banks of the river\, trying to catch people as they fled for freedom. I rode to Oberlin\, Ohio\, a town that staunchly defended freedom seekers\, embodied in the life of Lewis Leary\, who was lost in the fires of Harpers Ferry\, but whose spirit was reborn in the Harlem Renaissance. \nI hope that On Freedom Road will enable you to see familiar places—New York and Philadelphia\, New Orleans and Buffalo—in a very different light: from the vantage point of desperate people seeking to outrun the reach of slavery.”  David Goodrich\, Author \nJoin David Goodrich for his hybrid book talk to be held in-person at The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence located at 194 Livingston Avenue\, Albany\, NY 12210. For those unable to attend in-person\, please use the following Zoom link below. Questions? SUMMARY:UGRR Presentation at The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern NY
DESCRIPTION:Paul and Mary Liz Stewart\, co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center (dba) will present a new interpretation of an old story with an emphasis on legal cases and the law related to the Underground Railroad movement. Their seminal research brings forward the voices of people written out of this history and the first person accounts of Underground Railroad activists\, highlighting the roles of African American abolitionists and freedom seekers. An intriguing and comprehensive examination of a transformational period in American history.

SUMMARY:A New Interpretation of an Old Story presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join Paul and Mary Liz Stewart at the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak\, New York for a presentation on their seminal Underground Railroad research. \nThe Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language\, and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of enslavement in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. Join with Paul and Mary Liz Stewart\, independent researchers and co-founders of Underground Railroad Education Center as they share a new interpretation of a very old story and explain the various initiatives in which Underground Railroad Education Center is engaged as it works to connect the public with this empowering local history and its relevance for us today.
