SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad Revisited - at Fulton County Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:The Underground Railroad\, often remembered as being characterized by tunnels\, dark of night escapes\, coded language and hidey-holes\, was far more extensive and complex than these ideas have led us to believe. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of slavery in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. \nJoin with Paul and Mary Liz Stewart of Underground Railroad Education Center as they share a new interpretation  of a very old story and its relationship with us today. \n

SUMMARY:Recent Events Community Conversation - all are welcome to this hybrid event
DESCRIPTION:The multiple challenges and threats taking place around us\, locally\, nationally\, and internationally\, are affecting\, in one way or another\, our attention\, our ability to take care of our responsibilities\, and our relationships. From the cost of groceries we experience every week to the political rhetoric and the immigration and international crises we hear about daily\, we are dealing with a lot\, and things do not seem to be slowing down. From the cost alone. We can find strength and support in our community and in opportunities to share our concerns\, perspectives\, and stories as well to learn about those of others. What recent events have been in your mind recently\, and what thoughts or concerns have they made you consider? \nFor this purpose\, the Underground Railroad Education Center and the Excelsior University Center for Social Justice have partnered to facilitate monthly conversations about recent events at the Myers Residence. On  ET\, join us for cookies\, fruit\, coffee and lemonade at 194 Livingston Avenue in Albany NY or via Zoom (https://excelsior.zoom.us/j/93125316468)\, and participate in our facilitated dialogue\, or simply listen if you’d prefer\, about our reaction and response to the events happening around us. We are looking forward to seeing you there! \n\n\nMore Information\nFor more information\, contact: \nPamela Jimenez\nProgram Director for the Center for Social Justice\nExcelsior University\nPjimenez@excelsior.edu \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:July 4th Oration - Civil Rights as Spiritual Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Delving into deeper meanings of Freedom\, Justice and Divine Image\, Donna Elia will reflect upon the role of people of faith historically and currently and the need for repentance\, reparation and anti-racism. She will reflect upon a call to wholeness and theological reflection\, as well as a commitment to a lifelong journey of justice-seeking.\n  \n \nRev. Donna Elia has been an ordained Presbyterian Minister for 35 years. Since 2000\, she has been serving as executive director of Troy Area United Ministries. She is also pastor of St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church in Spencertown. She co-chairs Albany Presbytery’s Anti-Racism Task Force. She is also a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo. Donna and her partner\, Marian\, live in Niskayuna and have a son\, Luke. \n  \nWe will be acknowledging the volunteer service contributed to UREC by Daniel Pascoe Aguilar\, Judy Wing\, Brea Barthel\, Emily Durstewitz and Alvin Espino. \nAs in past years\, the program runs from 11am-12pm\, to be followed by lunch from 12pm-1pm. Please bring your own chair if you can. Please consider parking on Third Street which runs along the ‘backside’ of the Myers Residence Campus. Third Street\, which is one-way running east\, is easily accessed from Henry Johnson Blvd. \nI am afraid we will not have a children’s space this year. We cannot find anyone to manage that space. Children are welcome but corresponding adults will need to bring things to occupy the child/children. \nLooking forward to sharing July 4th with you at The Myers Residence backyard! If weather is inclement\, we will withdraw to the Hoop House (Greenhouse) on the Third Street properties. \n  \n————————— \n  \n“What\, to the American slave\, is your 4th of July? I answer: a day that reveals to him\, more than all others in the year\, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him\, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty\, an unholy license; your national greatness\, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants\, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality\, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns\, your sermons and thanksgivings\, with all your religious parade\, and solemnity\, are\, to him\, mere bombast\, fraud\, deception\, impiety\, and hypocrisy – a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices\, more shocking and bloody\, than are the people of these United States\, at this very hour.” Frederick Douglass\, 1852\, “What to the Slave is Your Fourth of July?” \n  \n

SUMMARY:Harriet Tubman Corridor - Your Input is Requested
DESCRIPTION:The Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS) invites the public to attend a public open house to receive information about the proposed Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Corridor. URCNYS and its team of consultants are in the process of drafting a Corridor Management Plan for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Corridor\, a 500-mile route that will traverse the state. The proposed route begins in New York City at the New Jersey Border. It travels north on NY Route 9 to Albany along the Hudson River\, and then turns west on NY Route 5S\, connecting through Central New York to Utica\, Syracuse\, and then Auburn in the Finger Lakes Region. The Corridor continues on NY-20 to Geneva\, then north on NY-14 to NY 31 through Rochester\, Brockport\, and Lockport to Buffalo. A final section of the 500-mile corridor traverses NY-265\, terminating in Niagara Falls. Interested members of the public are invited to attend and offer input before final sign-off and acknowledgment of the draft plan by NYDOT can occur.\nThe purpose of the public meeting is to learn about the proposed Corridor and its approval process while providing an opportunity for attendees to review and discuss the Corridor’s route and goals. This open meeting will ensure that adequate measures and input have been considered as the Corridor Management Plan evolves. Attendees will have an opportunity to review materials and provide comments to NYDOT and byway management representatives. This is an open house forum where attendees can also learn how to become involved in the process.\nInterested persons are invited to express their views in writing\, giving reasons for support of or in opposition to the proposed Corridor. All interested participants can find more information by searching the URCNYS website under urcnys.org/corridor . Comments or input will be received during the workshop or can be submitted via the Corridor portal at harriettubmancorridorny.com .

SUMMARY:Discovering the Frank Brothers - Freeborn Men of Color\, Soldiers of Independence
DESCRIPTION:Shirley Green will speak about her recent book\, Revolutionary Blacks: Discovering the Frank Brothers\, Freeborn Men of Color\, Soldiers of Independence (Westholme Publishing; 2023). The narrative follows the lives of William and Benjamin Frank\, two brothers who enlisted in Second Rhode Island Regiment during the American Revolutionary War in the spring of 1777. Their military experiences quickly diverged\, and Dr. Green explores their stories to provide context and substance to the Black experience during the war years\, as well as underscore the significant distinction between free Blacks in military service and those who had been enslaved\, and how they responded in different ways to the harsh realities of racism.\n\nRegister for Discovering the Frank Brothers – Freeborn Men of Color\, Soldiers of Independence\n\nShirley L. Green received her Ph.D. in history from Bowling Green State University after a twenty-six-year career in law enforcement. She is an adjunct professor of history at the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University. She is currently the Director of the Toledo Police Museum in Toledo\, Ohio.\n\n\nWednesday\, May 22\n12:00pm – 1:00pm EST\n\n\nAdditional Information available at https://nyslibrary.libcal.com/event/12176372

SUMMARY:UREC Reads: How to be an Antiracist - by Ibram X. Kendi - LAST SESSION
DESCRIPTION:Join with others to discuss Kendi’s compelling treatise on antiracism. With his reader-friendly style\, Kendi draws the reader in from the first page to the last. \n“Ibram X. Kendi’s concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America–but even more fundamentally\, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. Instead of working with the policies and system we have in place\, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like\, and how we can play an active role in building it. \nIn his memoir\, Kendi weaves together an electrifying combination of ethics\, history\, law\, and science–including the story of his own awakening to antiracism–bringing it all together in a cogent\, accessible form. He begins by helping us rethink our most deeply held\, if implicit\, beliefs and our most intimate personal relationships (including beliefs about race and IQ and interracial social relations) and reexamines the policies and larger social arrangements we support. How to Be an Antiracist promises to become an essential book for anyone who wants to go beyond an awareness of racism to the next step of contributing to the formation of a truly just and equitable society.” (https://www.ibramxkendi.com/how-to-be-an-antiracist) \nUREC Reads will meet on the 2nd Friday of each month as a hybrid event from 5:30-7pm. In-person will be at The Myers Residence\, 194 Livingston Avenue\, Albany with virtual via Zoom. Copies of Kendi’s book are available at local libraries as well as at https://www.thriftbooks.com/ for as little as $4.79\, as well as at Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza (https://www.bhny.com/) and other bookstores. \n\nApril 12 – chapters 16\, 17\, 18\n\nRegister on Zoom using this link – https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtdOCgrD0uEtEZCnzA54oakabmdOLx-fgc   \n  \n

SUMMARY:Weaving Stories with UREC & Lori Kochanski
DESCRIPTION:  \nCalling ALL regional Albany NY Residents with a story to tell… Looking for the next 2024 “First Friday” thing-to-do? Learn how to weave YOUR story into a unique piece of art that you can take home with you! \nEXPLORE how art\, in this case weaving\, tells a story without words about the artist and their community. These workshops create opportunities for self-expression through making something with your own two hands. Participants may bring an article of clothing or piece of fabric that they no longer wear – and that holds a special memory. Using cardboard looms each participant will weave a small piece of fabric that represents a significant story or moment in their life. \nThere will also be a chance to participate in creating a large-scale community weaving. Weaving and art making has often been a way to retell the story of people gathered in a certain place and time. This community weaving project will be an expression of many stories coming together to tell a story of what it means to be a neighbor. \nThe finished project will become part of a permanent collection to be exhibited at UREC’s FUTURE Interpretive Center on Livingston Avenue. \nSpace is limited! Reserve your spot NOW \nABOUT LORI: Lori Kochanski is a fiber artist with a focus on weaving and knitting. She combines her love of fiber and fabric and people to create storied pieces of art. Lori also works with the city of Albany as a Neighborhood Specialist. Lori’s studio at the Albany Barn is named the Riparian Zone Studio. In nature\, the riparian zone is the fertile\, messy and necessary place where the water meets the land. Her space and time at the Albany Barn have certainly been fertile and necessary for growing and stretching as an artist in community. Today\, Lori finds deep joy in her art and the people she has met through her work. Much like her weaving\, she herself is constantly being transformed.
