DESCRIPTION:Members of The Capital District Humanist Society will join with Paul and Mary Liz Stewart for an in-person two hour tour experience at The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence to learn about the involvement of Albany’s Black activists in the Underground Railroad movement and the contemporary relevance of that activism with us today. \n  \nTour Experience Description – ‘Meet’ local Black Abolitionists and Freedom Seekers whose voices have been reclaimed as part of the Underground Railroad narrative. Enjoy a hands-on experience with period artifacts. Analyze period documents which relate an account different from the standard Underground Railroad narrative. Step back in time with period attire. Explore how the Underground Railroad movement relates to our justice concerns for today and how many of the issues faced by abolitionists and freedom seekers are still with us today.  \nTime – 1pm-3pm\n\nCost per person – $15\n\nRain Date – bring an umbrella/raincoat as we will spend some of the tour time outside on The Myers Residence Campus\n\nCOVID protocols – masks at all times / social distancing / sign in on a paper form that confirms one is safely healthy and which provides contact information if needed – UREC pen used to complete form goes with guest  / hand sanitizer available to be used before tour begins and throughout tour as desired /\n\nAccessibility – there is a lift at the back entrance to The Myers Residence and 8 stairs to the front entrance / there are interior stairs to the 2nd and 3rd floors

Tucked in a corner of the Dr. Thomas Elkins lot\, this garden was originally reclaimed from a debris strewn\, overgrown corner of The Elkins lot and designed by a group of teens who were part of The Young Abolitionist Teen Scholars’ Institute five years ago. Groundhogs\, ground freezing and thawing\, weather\, and animal activity have taken a toll on this lovely space. \nYour help for any portion of the four hours the teens will be working to revitalize this garden space would be greatly appreciated. Paul and Mary Liz Stewart will provide a welcome\, to be followed by Opening Remarks from curator Derek Healey. Poet and Artist Danielle Colin will read her original poetry piece and offer remarks. Small groups will be escorted to the exhibit in 15 minute rotations. An original painting by Danielle Colin is included in the exhibit. Refreshments and socially-distanced seating will be available in the backyard of The Residence. An After Discussion will commence at 3:45pm. The Grand Opening will conclude at 4pm. Masks covering nose and mouth and social distancing will be required during the Grand Opening. In the midst of significant pro-slavery sentiment\, New York State was home to many abolitionists working to abolish the institution of enslavement in our state and nation and it was visited by many who had escaped enslavement and sought a life of freedom. The Kidnapping Club was a network of judges\, lawyers\, police officers and bankers who sanctioned the kidnapping of free Black men\, women and children in New York City who were then sold into markets in the southern states\, South America\, and the Caribbean for vast sums of wealth.\n  \n \nJonathan Daniel Wells\, PhD\, is a prize-winning historian whose most recent book\, The Kidnapping Club\, tells of the intersections among Wall Street\, slavery\, and resistance to the illicit slave trade in New York City just before the Civil War. SUMMARY:LibertyCon 2021 -- Dr. Dorothy L. Brown and the Politics of Adoption and Abortion\, 1950 to 1968
DESCRIPTION:In 1956\, Dr. Dorothy L. Brown became the first single woman in Tennessee to legally adopt a child. This accomplishment was one of many firsts that Dr. Brown achieved in her storied life. Once a ward of the Troy Orphan Asylum in Troy\, NY\, Brown was a leader in medicine and politics who authored a failed abortion law during her time as the first African-American Representative in the Tennessee General Assembly. This presentation explores the context in which Dr. Brown lived and worked\, the ways that her early life and work informed her involvement in adoption and abortion reform efforts in the decades before Roe v. Wade\, and the relevance of her work for us today.\n  \n \nDr. Kori A. Graves\, PhD\, is an Associate Professor of History at the State University of New York at Albany. A graduate of the Program in Gender and Women’s History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, Dr. Graves’ research evaluates the significance of political and popular representations of gender\, race\, nation\, and family. Her book\, A War Born Family: African American Adoption in the Wake of the Korean War tells the story of the first African Americans who adopted Korean children\, and the ways their efforts revealed the contested nature of adoptive family formation across racial and national lines in the Cold War era. Dr. Graves is also a dedicated instructor. She has won awards for teaching excellence for her courses that explore gender and women’s history\, the history of marriage and family\, and histories of the body\, beauty and identity politics in the U.S.

The B+P Committee will focus on two major construction projects – the interior restoration of The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence and the building of The Interpretive Center. The two construction projects are in the pre-development stages so setting up a plan of attack along with investigating and selecting options for the pre-development phase and then the construction phase for both projects is just beginning. Join in the fun! \n  \nThe B+P Committee will meet on the first Thursday of each month for 60-90 minutes. DESCRIPTION:Staten Island\, one of New York City’s five boroughs\, has a rich history that includes free and freedom seeker African Americans. In her research\, Ms. Paige has uncovered significant documentation that has brought this history to light. Weaving historical information with stories collected from first person accounts told by people who came to Staten Island from other places\, we will learn about what they were willing to do to stay\, how they accomplished their desires\, and how this information is related with us today.\n  \n \nDebbie-Ann Paige\, MA\, Adjunct Lecturer\, City University of NY College of Staten Island\, and Genealogist and founder of PAIGE ONE ASSIST\, is a public historian specializing in local African American history\, a co-president of the newly chartered Richard B. Dickenson Staten Island Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) and professional genealogist. She has worked on numerous local history projects including: In Pursuit of Freedom with the Brooklyn Historical Society; From Farm to City with the Staten Island Museum; the designation of the Louis Napoleon House as a site to freedom with the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network on behalf of the Sandy Ground Historical Society\, and the recent City Council street renaming of the corner of Fairview Avenue and Knox Place as “Samuel A. Browne Way” in the Castleton Hill section of Staten Island. Debbie-Ann has appeared as a historical interpreter on the Emmy winning show “Secrets of New York\,” and is working closely with Frederick Douglass Memorial Park to transcribe their historical records. She facilitates public history forums throughout Staten Island focused on the historical perspectives of race relations and lectures as an adjunct at the College of Staten Island.

The Knapps left an impressive collection of personal letters and belongings at Cherry Hill that tell the story of their struggles for autonomy and their strong ties of kinship. \nDr. Kori Graves will share her research on C. Mary Williams and her family\, African Americans living in Albany from the early 1800s to the end of the century.

DESCRIPTION:In the middle decades of the 18th Century\, the Oblong Meeting at Pawling – along with other Quaker communities – were spreading across eastern Dutchess County and points beyond. The area would go on to boast the largest settlement of Quakers outside of Philadelphia. Almost from the beginning\, these Quakers found themselves at the forefront of the slavery-antislavery debate and the Underground Railroad. DESCRIPTION:New York was the last slaving port in the Americas. Long after Congress banned the trade\, hundreds of ships were leaving the wharfs of Manhattan bound for the African coast.
