SUMMARY:Water Music New York: More Voices - with UREC at Schuylerville's Hudson Crossing Park
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Erie Canal bicentennial commemoration\, the Albany Symphony\, the NYS Canal Corporation\, and Hudson Crossing Park are presenting a festival day celebrating the rich\, multifaceted history of Washington and Saratoga Counties\, with an emphasis on the experiences of Black Americans\, culminating in a free orchestra concert that will feature a thrilling world-premiere composition by DBR (Daniel Bernard Roumain) inspired by the legacy and life of Solomon Northup. \nNorthup was a free-born Black man\, professional fiddler\, and farmer from Schuylerville and Saratoga Springs\, who was kidnapped into slavery in 1841. Upon his rescue in 1853\, he wrote a remarkable memoir\, Twelve Years a Slave\, describing his ordeal in extraordinary detail. He became a noted abolitionist speaker in the years following his return to New York State. \nDBR\, an accomplished violinist himself and a leading American composer\, will create a uniquely collaborative work for the Albany Symphony and audience of massed violins\, in which community members are all invited to pick up a violin and join in\, even those who have never played before. In addition\, the day’s events will celebrate the rich culture of the Schuylerville region\, the historic Erie Canal and Hudson River\, and the central role the region played during the Revolutionary War during the Battle of Saratoga\, the turning point of the Revolution. \nViolinists and country fiddlers and singers of all kinds will be featured during the day\, along with visual artists\, history and walking tours\, and accessible recreational activities. Artisanal foods and beverages from the region will also be featured. \n  \nUREC will be hosting a Song Circle at 4pm in the Pavilion. Join us in singing\, commemorating and celebrating the courage and fortitude of our communal forebears. \n  \nComplete details for the day’s activities are accessible by clicking HERE

SUMMARY:Pinkster Fest in Kinderhook
DESCRIPTION:Why Pinkster Fest in Kinderhook? \nSettled before 1651 – a few years after Henry Hudson (1609) explored the river which bears his name – Kinderhook\, established as a town in 1788\, encompassed most of what is now Columbia County. In the late 1700s\, Kinderhook had the largest population of enslaved people outside of New York City. \nAfrican Americans have been an integral part of Columbia County’s history for nearly 400 years — living\, working and even worshipping alongside the Dutch settlers. The labor and contributions of those enslaved at places like Lindenwald were pivotal in making the Hudson Valley what it is today. Once manumitted\, those original Black families thrived and created a vibrant community in the midst of the European families. \nWhat is Pinkster? \nPinkster (aka Pentecost) is the original Afro Dutch holiday that’s distinct to the Hudson Valley. While their Dutch enslavers celebrated Pentecost\, they would\, traditionally\, give the enslaved a few “days off” to reunite with family and friends\, catch up with each other and celebrate. Our stories are intertwined\, and Pinkster is our shared holiday! \nThroughout the 1700’s\, enslaved people gathered to celebrate with music\, food\, dancing\, and commerce during this week of temporary freedom. Many Dutch joined the annual celebration making it a truly multicultural community affair. \nThis year the African American Archive of Columbia County and the NPS Martin Van Buren Historic Site have combined a Pinkster Fest with their 2nd. Annual Old Kinderhook Black Family Reunion which brings together the descendants of the Lindenwald’s enslaved people. \nJoin us \n\nProcession to the Persons of Color cemetery\, led by a gospel choir\nCeremony honoring the deceased\nCrowning of King Charlie\, the Festival King\nAfrican drummers and dancers\nReading corner (Kinderhook Library)\nOyster shucking demonstration (Mother Shuckers\, NYC)\nExhibit (Underground Railroad Educational Center – Albany)\nColonial Games (Columbia County Historical Society)\nGenealogy table (African American Archive)\nBBQ and strawberries with cream\nAnd more!!!\n\nAdmission Free!!! \nSponsored by: \nAfrican American Archive of Columbia County | Croton-on-Hudson | Croton-on-Hudson\, NY 10520 US

SUMMARY:UREC Reel Talk: Jon Scott Bennett presents ep. 4 "A Long Ways From Home" of his docu-series "The Peekskill Riots"
DESCRIPTION:On September 4th\, 1949\, roughly 30\,000 people were attacked after attending a Paul Robeson concert. A similar concert was prevented from happening the previous week by a racist and anti-Semitic mob. These attacks had thrown the small upstate community into a national controversy\, prompting supporters of Robeson to organize a second concert to defend his right to perform and speak freely. \nWith the Governor promising an unprecedented level of police protection\, many felt secure in attending the concert\, assuming violence would not break out again. While the concert was peacefully conducted\, attendees would be ambushed upon leaving the concert grounds. Projectiles and hateful epithets alike were hurled at the exiting cars and buses. Hundreds of attendees left the grounds bloodied\, bruised\, and outright maimed. \nThis fourth episode of a 5-part docu-series focuses on the second of the two Peekskill Riots of 1949 when the worst riot in the region’s history would unfold before the eyes of the world. \nViewing and conversation will be possible through a zoom link and through participation from the comfort of the front parlor of The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence. . \n  \nJOIN ZOOM MEETING \n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87580900723?pwd=PIh8MjXTzLf5mBbG9ISQ0daTMZfPKA.1\nMEETING ID:  875 8090 0723\nPASSCODE:  113256\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/keDZ1WpUxw\n\n  \nABOUT JON SCOTT: \nDocumentarian Jon Scott Bennett has gained national recognition for his coverage of the Peekskill riots of 1949 and his previous films covering under-discussed history including The Pound Ridge Massacre and The Leatherman. Bennett bridges the gap between in-person and online audiences to share the important stories hidden in our backyard.

SUMMARY:UREC Reel Talk: Jon Scott Bennett presents ep. 1 "The Mighty Oak in the Forest" The Story of Paul Robeson - from his docu-series "The Peekskill Riots"
DESCRIPTION:On August 27 and September 4th\, 1949\, violence broke out at two concerts held outside Peekskill\, NY\, headlined by black singer\, actor\, and activist Paul Robeson. Citizens of Peekskill\, galvanized by racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and disdain for Robeson’s left-wing views and campaign for civil rights\, started two riots that resulted in hundreds of injuries\, made national news\, and unofficially marked the beginning of the McCarthy era\, which would nearly erase Robeson from the public consciousness. \nWho was he? What did he do? What did he stand for? These questions must be answered in order to understand what brought him to Peekskill. This first episode of a 5-part docu-series will serve not only as an introduction to the story of the concerts\, but it will also introduce the headlining performer\, Paul Robeson\, the first and last casualty of The Peekskill Riots. \nViewing and conversation will be possible through a zoom link and through participation from the comfort of the front parlor of The Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence. \n  \nJOIN ZOOM MEETING \n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89114470494?pwd=ywkqL1PeUctFvt2tzNH6Li2NoK5zUE.1\nMEETING ID:  891 1447 0494\nPASSCODE:  195138\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kgxIXWgeC\n\n  \nABOUT JON SCOTT \nDocumentarian Jon Scott Bennett has gained national recognition for his coverage of the Peekskill riots of 1949 and his previous films covering under-discussed history including The Pound Ridge Massacre and The Leatherman.
