SUMMARY:UREC Reads: Black Reconstruction 1860-1880 (ch. 17) - W.E.B. Du Bois book conversation
DESCRIPTION:Du Bois\, an incredible thinker and author who pushes beyond the limits of the American narrative with his challenging observations and interpretations\, challenges and enriches the reader’s understanding of Reconstruction. A must read and a great source of stimulating conversation. \nPlease bring questions and comments to this conversation. \nDu Bois published Black Reconstruction (BR) in 1935 with Harcourt\, Brace and Company (New York). He completed it after leaving the NAACP and returning to Atlanta University. Its subtitle\, “An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America\, 1860-1880\,” neatly summarized his central argument in the book. Accordingly\, Black Reconstruction foregrounds several recurring Du Boisian themes: the role of African American agency in the building of the U.S.A. and the significance of promoting African American equality and freedom in order to achieve the promise of democracy. The book directly challenged dominant views of the time that the Reconstruction era in American history was a disaster for the South and for the country. It received much comment\, including criticisms\, from across the political spectrum. (http://www.webdubois.org) \nLooking forward to your joining in locally and from around the globe! \n  \nZoom information follows — \nWhen: Nov 12\, 2021 05:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nRegister in advance for this meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUrcuugpzosHdTvPMatDBUSqqDAURJGvaSZ \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:"We Took to Ourselves Liberty" - The Underground Railroad in Oneida County\, NY
DESCRIPTION:“‘We took to ourselves liberty”: Historic Sites Relating to the Underground Railroad\, Abolitionism\, and African American Life in Oneida County and Beyond.” The Underground Railroad was one of America’s monumental stories\,  a multi-racial civil rights movement of epic proportions. Before the Civil War\, as many as 100\,000 people escaped from slavery\, some alone and some with help from allies of African\, European\, and Native descent. As a major transportation hub\, Oneida County became a center of this national movement. Most freedom seekers went through Oneida County to Canada. Many also settled here. This program gives examples of homes\, workplaces\, military sites\, and transportation routes that help tell these remarkable stories\nPresenters include Judith Wellman\, Principal Investigator\, and researchers and writers Jan DeAmicis\, Jessica Clarke Harney\, Milton Sernett\, and Deirdre Sinnott.\n\nHere is the Zoom link to join the program:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EqJXL8IwSZSFhPIoVcwsIg

SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - Building Community through Free Black Migration before the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:The scholarship on the Underground Railroad movement and the Great Migration is vast but little attention has been paid to the voluntary migratory patterns of free black Americans before the Civil War. Dr. Jennifer Thompson Burns will shine light on the importance of studying the antebellum migratory patterns of free Black Americans in the tri-city area of New York State and use this data to explain the benefits this migration had on black community development past and present.\n  \n \nJennifer Burns\, PhD\, is a professor of history in the Africana Studies Department at The State University of New York at Albany. Her concentration is in American history and with the story of Black Citizens of Troy\, New York and their work in abolition prior to the American Civil War. Professor Burns is a commentator on WAMC’s Round Table Program\, is a board member of Underground Railroad Education Center and The Hart Cluett Museum\, and is active in curriculum development and community education. She has received her Masters and Doctoral degrees from the State University of New York at Albany. Dr. Burns has presented at numerous community events and conference\, received numerous awards\, and has contributed to Civil War Slave Database in Virginia (2011-2012)\, and Slavery By Another Name (2012). \n Today’s event is made possible\, in part\, by an Action Grant from Humanities New York. Humanities New York encourages critical thinking and cultural understanding in the public arena through grants\, programs\, networking and advocacy. Visit humanitiesny.org to learn more.

SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - Destined to Engage and Collaborate: Examining the Social/Political Dynamics of Native Americans and African Americans in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Through anecdotal historical and contemporary narratives\, this seminar presents compelling evidence that Native Americans and African Americans have provided unique intertwining social\, political and cultural contributions to the development of our United States society. This symbiotic relationship contributed to establishing collaborative agency between these similarly oppressed people in their efforts to gain equal rights and equal status in a world strongly opposed to such gains.\n  \n \nDarryl Omar Freeman\, Lecturer\, is a University Faculty Senator and Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Ethnic Studies at California State University\, Sacramento. He is an accomplished researcher\, writer\, speaker\, and social/cultural critic. His scholastic work spans many different social and political arenas – from public policy reform and racial/cultural representation in the United States to community of color identity issues\, critical ethnic coalition movement building\, and social political issues of the African Diaspora. He is presently part of the leadership committee coordinating the “Ethnic Studies Now” effort to institute a requirement in the State of California that all high school students take an Introduction to Ethnic Studies course as a graduation requirement. There is presently a pilot program in five Sacramento Unified School District high schools \nAs an engaged community activist Freeman has served as a Board Member\, Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution\, Black Lives Matter moderator\, co-organizer of the “Red Hand Day” Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers\, African American Graduation Celebration Steering Committee member\, a Cooper-Woodson College Peer Mentor and has been a Loaves and Fishes Homeless Inc. service volunteer for over 20 years. \nProfessor Freeman has been a guest speaker and chaired many academic conference panels and is a member of the following academic organizations; The American Anthropological Association\, The American Political Science Association\, National Association of Ethnic Studies\, National Conference of Black Political Scientists\, National Council for Black Studies\, and the Southwestern Social Sciences Association. He has also been Associate Editor for the Africana Journal\, San Francisco State University and Assistant Editor of the Sacramento Hmong Journal\, Sacramento. Publications include “Mixed-Race Individuals: A Solution for Race Relations in America” in Introduction to Ethnic Studies (Dale Allender and Gregory Ye Mark\, eds.\, Kendall Hunt Publishing 2016). \n  \n Today’s event is made possible\, in part\, by an Action Grant from Humanities New York. SUMMARY:BARBECUE
DESCRIPTION:BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara\nBlack Theatre Troupe of Upstate New York (BTTUNY) kicks off their 2021-22 Season with an outdoor production of BARBECUE by Robert O’Hara. BARBECUE centers around the O’Mallerys\, a dysfunctional group of siblings who come together for a park barbeque in order to stage an emergency intervention for their sister Barbara\, whose drug habit has gotten out of hand.\nBARBECUE will take place at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence at 194 Livingston Ave. with performances on August 20-22 and 27-29 at 6pm. Seating will be under a tent in the backyard of The Myers Residence. Street parking is on Livingston Avenue and on Third Street. \n“At first\, “Barbecue” appears to be a whiteface take on O’Hara’s usual themes\, but then\, about fifteen minutes into the show\, he flips the dramaturgical switch. As Lillie Anne\, howling\, tries to get everyone onto her intervention fantasy train—it’s one way to keep her siblings together—the lights go down. Before long\, they come up again\, and we are watching the same family dressed in the same way on the same set\, but now they’re black…” (The New Yorker\, Hilton Als). Read the full review at https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/10/26/talking-trash-the-theatre-hilton-als \n  \nTickets available at https://capitalrep.org/event/barbecue/?doing_wp_cron=1624023495.7230410575866699218750

The time is now to enact a bold policy agenda that doesn’t just alleviate poverty\, but ends it. Rev. McNeill will discuss the impact of poverty in the Capital Region and New York State and how efforts like the Poor People’s Campaign are organizing in response.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 \nRev. West has also worked with United Methodist Kairos Response\, a denominational network advocating for justice and human rights in Israel/Palestine. They have a B.A. in journalism from Ithaca College. \nhttps://laborreligion.org/\n  \nRev. Phil Grigsby\, originally scheduled to present on this date\, is unable to do so. Rev. SUMMARY:African American Marbleization - An Act of Civil Disobedience
DESCRIPTION:African American Marbleization is a series of sculptures by Yvonne Shortt. It is her response to oppression and racisms of African Americans in art\, history\, and her country. It draws on her personal experience of being a woman of color and her desire to use education\, communication\, research\, and art to further conversation and  action. Shortt portrays everyday people of color and objects used primarily by people of color who are at war with a social\, economic\, and political system that has  undervalued their labor and bodies since the formation of the U.S.A. Through research of the objects\, community conversations\, and redesign the objects take on  new/enhanced forms and meanings. \nA pond installation built with the local community to install sculptures above and under the water of the pond. The sculptures are designed based on everyday artifacts from the time of Myers. It aims to commemorate all the everyday people who each took part in the Underground Railroad movement\, and the importance of how we choose to  live our everyday life to create change. \nSculptures\nA couple of pieces installed above water will be modeled after the pieces of furniture in the Underground Railroad Education Center such as the woodstove in the parlor. We will work with the community members and have them create pieces in the water. The design of these pieces will be based on the everyday life artifacts found through the Center’s archeology program. The above-water sculptures will be visible from the sidewalk and attract viewers\, and as they approach the pond they will see more objects underwater which will create a more intimate experience with the installation. \n  \nCommunity members are welcome to participate in building the sculpture under Yvonne’s direction. Interested? Call Mary Liz Stewart at 518-621-7793 or email via the Contact Us page. Leave a message and Mary Liz will call you back with details. Please plan to commit to participating 9am-12pm from July 26 through July 30.

SUMMARY:FreedomCon 2021 - Racist Violence is as American as Cherry Pie
DESCRIPTION:SNCC chair H. Rap Brown was excoriated after a July 1967 press conference where he told reporters: “I say violence is necessary. Violence is a part of America’s culture. It is as American as cherry pie. Americans taught the black people to be violent. We will use that violence to rid ourselves of oppression if necessary. We will be free\, by any means necessary.”\nFollowing the attack by Trump supporters on the U.S. Capitol\, Joe Biden issued a statement that “The scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect a true America\, do not represent who we are.” While some Republicans in Congress accused the Democrats and Black Lives Matter movement of normalizing violence and rioting\, other elected officials from both political parties\, including Donald Trump\, echoed Biden’s remarks. Unfortunately\, H. Rap Brown was right. Violence\, especially racist violence directed at African Americans is as “American as cherry pie.”\n  \n\n\nAlan Singer\, PhD\, is a professor of Teaching\, Learning and Technology and the director of social studies education programs at Hofstra University\, Hempstead\, New York.
