Yours for the Oppressed\, Harriet Myers features pieces chosen by our museum’s Special Collections curator in honor of Black Women’s contributions to social justice in America. The exhibition centers around an 1860 letter written by Harriet Myers to white abolitionist John Jay II which is graciously on loan from the John Jay Homestead in Katonah\, NY. \nOther works on display are publications edited and co-written by Harriet and Stephen\, as well as examples of Black abolitionist embroidery\, and artwork highlighting the continuation of the movement. We are excited to share with you not only the life of Harriet Myers\, but how her activist legacy continues to this day\, exemplified by five local Black women: Didi Delgado\, Jamaica Miles\, Leah Pennimen\, Barbara Smith\, and Tabetha Wilson. \nHarriet’s handwritten one-page letter is a treasure trove of information about UGRR activism\, the role of Black female abolitionists\, and the political climate of the 1860’s in the Capital Region. \nA gem to behold\, following the grand opening this letter will be on display during public visiting hours of 5pm-8pm Mondays-Fridays and 12pm-4pm Saturdays. Please call 518-621-7793 to schedule a viewing of Yours for the Oppressed\, Harriet Myers.\nMasks covering nose and mouth will be required when inside The Myers Residence. SUMMARY:Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute Service Day - You are Invited to Participate
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to dig in the dirt? Like to plant flowers? Like to beautify a garden? Then this service day is for YOU! \nJoin forces with our Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute teens as they reclaim a once lovely Rock Garden that has languished over the last few years. Groundhogs\, ground freezing and thawing\, weather\, and animal activity have taken a toll on this lovely space. \nYour help for any portion of the four hours the teens will be working to revitalize this garden space would be greatly appreciated. More hands means light work for all. \nTools\, refreshments\, and a restroom facility are available. Masks covering nose and mouth will be required at all times. Hand sanitizer will be available. \nCall Mary Liz Stewart at 518-621-7793 of email at https://undergroundrailroadhistory.org/contact/ with questions or concerns. \nSee you on October 10! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Leadership Institute\, as a service-learning program\, is designed for 20 teens and is conducted across an 80-hour\, four-week period that runs through July and August 2020. Small groups of teens work with professionals in Focus Groups learning and applying real world research and analysis and planning skills to a collaboratively agreed upon focus\, which is a justice concern of interest to the group of teens and appropriate to the profession represented by the Focus Group Facilitator. Integrated into the experience is the learning and improving of work readiness skills\, leadership and collaboration skills\, skills of planning and implementing and evaluating an action plan and its outcomes\, as well as learning the history related to local historic Underground Railroad activists and their relationship with us today\, and learning how to be civically responsible members of the community. \nEach teen Focus Group is expected to produce a Legacy Project\, left behind for others to be educated and enriched\, which exhibits what the teens have learned\, and which invites others to engage with in some interactive fashion. Enrichment modules are integrated into the program which focus on college preparedness\, financial literacy\, entrepreneurship and healthy lifestyle choices. \nInforming the Leadership Institute design and experience is the work of Howard Gardner who is an American developmental psychologist and the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Research Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education at Harvard University and who is credited with formulation of the Theory of Multiple intelligences. Gardner states\, “We should spend less time ranking children and more time helping them to identify their natural competencies and gifts and cultivate these. There are hundreds and hundreds of ways to succeed and many\, many different abilities that will help you get there.”  (2016) \nCOVID safety protocols are practiced daily so as to keep everyone safe.

SUMMARY:L’il Freedom Seekers Story Time Helps Parents Navigate Hard History
DESCRIPTION:Partnering with Underground Railroad Education Center\, acclaimed children’s educators and teaching artists Mariah Ralph and Yahoteh Kokayi of Harlem School of the Arts will lead children and their parents or caregivers through 30 minutes of music and interactive fun exploring themes of freedom\, race\, and community to a lively beat. The program will center around an interactive reading of James Ransome’s ALA and Coretta Scott King award-winning book The Bell Rang and original freedom sing-along songs. \nThere’s never been a more important time to address issues of race and social justice\, even with the youngest members of our society. By the time children reach the classroom\, entrenched notions of society’s power structures are often already in place. Parents want to help undo racism\, but knowing how to talk with their children about our nation’s history of slavery and its continued impact on our communities can be confounding. \n“We hope to bring history to life and grow the next generation of social justice activists.” ~ UREC Board President Natalie Criscione\n  \nL’il Freedom Seekers Story Time (ages 3-5) \nThursday\, June 11th\, 11:00-11:30 ET via Zoom! \nRegister here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/little-freedom-seekers-storytime-tickets-107240631616 \nThis event is FREE to attend \n  \nNew York City’s premier community arts institution\, the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA)\, stands unique as the sole provider of arts education in music\, dance\, theatre\, art & design and musical theatre\, all within its award-winning 37\,000 square foot facility.  The School’s reputation for artistic rigor and excellence attracts constituents of diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds from all five New York City boroughs\, Westchester County\, Connecticut and New Jersey. HSA’s alumni and faculty are counted among the most talented leaders in the arts. Learn more about the Harlem School of the Arts. \n  \nAbout The Bell Rang \nRecipient of a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Award \nA Kirkus Reviews Best Picture Book of 2019 \nA young slave girl witnesses the heartbreak and hopefulness of her family and their plantation community when her brother escapes for freedom in this brilliantly conceived picture book by Coretta Scott King Award winner James E. Ransome. \nEvery single morning\, the overseer of the plantation rings the bell. Daddy gathers wood. Mama cooks. Ben and the other slaves go out to work. Each day is the same. Full of grueling work and sweltering heat. Every day\, except one\, when the bell rings and Ben is nowhere to be found. Because Ben ran. Yet\, despite their fear and sadness\, his family remains hopeful that maybe\, just maybe\, he made it North. That he is free. \nAn ode to hope and a powerful tribute to the courage of those who ran for freedom\, The Bell Rang is a stunning reminder that our past can never be forgotten. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Liberty Con 2020 - To Be Rescheduled
DESCRIPTION:In our increasingly polarized society\, the symbol of the 19th century Underground Railroad movement and its abolition activists challenge us to publicly reflect and act upon the legacy of the institution of slavery in our contemporary times. (P. Stewart) \nAs the first civil rights movement in the United States\, the Underground Railroad movement provides a foundation upon which we can stand today as we work to ensure equity and justice for all. \nFull Details \nThe Underground Railroad movement provides a living model for continuing the road to freedom which it began—building community\, partnering with others to educate\, explore\, and create as we travel the path of justice for all. \nExpanding the scope of LibertyCon 2020 and building upon our past\, URHP aims to bring together social justice organizations and their representatives and participants\, broadly defined\, from throughout the Capital Region and beyond—gaining strength through partnership; sharing knowledge\, strategies\, and agendas; and bringing more people to a bigger table to create a better tomorrow.

SUMMARY:Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880 - ch.5 - via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:The pioneering work in the study of the role of Black Americans during Reconstruction by the most influential Black intellectual of his time. \nThis pioneering work was the first full-length study of the role black Americans played in the crucial period after the Civil War\, when those enslaved had been freed and the attempt was made to reconstruct American society. Hailed at the time\, Black Reconstruction in America 1860–1880 has justly been called a classic. \nFrom webdubois.org- “Du Bois published Black Reconstruction (BR) in 1935 with Harcourt\, Brace and Company (New York). He completed it after leaving the NAACP and returning to Atlanta University. Its subtitle\, “An Essay Toward a History of the Part Which Black Folk Played in the Attempt to Reconstruct Democracy in America\, 1860-1880\,” neatly summarized his central argument in the book. Accordingly\, Black Reconstruction foregrounds several recurring Du Boisian themes: the role of African American agency in the building of the U.S.A. and the significance of promoting African American equality and freedom in order to achieve the promise of democracy. The book directly challenged dominant views of the time that the Reconstruction era in American history was a disaster for the South and for the country. It received much comment\, including criticisms\, from across the political spectrum. \nCopies of Black Reconstruction are available from Underground Railroad Education Center (Underground Railroad History Project) for $25 + $5 postage. Please contact Mary Liz Stewart at 518-779-4038 to make arrangements. \nDue to the COVID-19 situation the book discussion will be held via Zoom – Meeting connection information follows:\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/5209859664 \nMeeting ID: 520 985 9664\nOne tap mobile\n+19292056099\,\,5209859664# US (New York)                                                                                                +13017158592\,\,5209859664# US (Germantown) \nDial by your location\n+1 929 205 6099 US (New York)\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\nMeeting ID: 520 985 9664\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kwG6LNKCr \n

Hailed at the time\, Black Reconstruction in America 1860–1880 has justly been called a classic. \nFrom webdubois.org \n“Du Bois published Black Reconstruction (BR) in 1935 with Harcourt\, Brace and Company (New York). \nApril 10 – Cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic \nMay 18 – chapters 4-5 \nJune 12 – chapter 6-7 \nJuly 10 – chapters 8 \nAugust 14 – chapters 9-10 \nSeptember 11 – chapters 11-12 \nOctober 9 – chapters 13-14 \nNovember 6 – chapters 15-17 (this if the 1st Friday in November)

SUMMARY:Metro Friends - 5 Boros to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Join in the planning of 5 Boros to Freedom 2020 – a celebration of African American history and culture in the five boroughs of New York City. \nHIGHLIGHTING THE PINKSTER THEMES OF SELF-RELIANCE\, SUPPORTING OTHERS\, SELF-ASSERTION\, AND COMMUNITY\, 5 BOROS TO FREEDOM LOOKS TO CELEBRATE THESE THEMES THROUGH A VARIETY OF PROGRAM OFFERINGS TO BE HELD IN EACH OF THE FIVE BOROUGHS IN MAY 2020. \nOriginally a Dutch religious holiday brought to New York City by Dutch colonists\, Africans transformed Pinksterfest into an African festival that came to be known as Pinkster and which was enjoyed by an eclectic mix of young and old\, African and European\, enslaved and free\, and Native Americans. Drawing upon African cultural traditions\, Pinkster provided the occasion for creation of a social space and communal identity. Pinkster was banned in New York State in 1811 out of fear of the gathering of large numbers of celebrants in one location at one time. \n5 Boros to Freedom intends to revive and renew this community celebration\, honoring the communal ancestors\, paying tribute to their fortitude and courage\, and drawing strength from them as we celebrate these themes of self -reliance\, supporting others\, self-assertion and community in the present. 5 Boros to Freedom is an extension of the work of Underground Railroad History Project with the intention of supporting and celebrating community engagement with the rich African American history that resides in the five boroughs of New York City as we reclaim and celebrate the silenced voices of our communal ancestors\, drawing upH their strength to carry on our work for justice today.
