Hoop House Greenhouse Ribbon Cutting – You are Invited

EARTH DAY MARKED WITH HOOP HOUSE RIBBON CUTTING

Underground Railroad Education Center at 194 Livingston Avenue in Albany has initiated an inter-generational Greenhouse Hoop House Project and will cut a ribbon for its inauguration on April 23rd at 12:30pm. The pubic is invited to participate in the ribbon cutting and reception program. Brief remarks will be made which will tie together the work of the Underground Railroad Education Center with Earth Day and the work of 19th century abolitionists and stories of freedom seekers. The program and reception will conclude by 1:30pm. Funding for the Hoop House was secured from the AAPR Community Impact Projects Fund.
The Hoop House was completed with the help of community volunteers, teens from the Young abolitionist Leadership Institute and volunteers from Regeneron Corporation. A feature of note for the ribbon cutting is lettuce planted in December on an experimental basis is already near time for harvest.
“The hoop house is an exciting development”, said Paul Stewart, a board member of the Underground Railroad Education Center. “It will enable teens and seniors to garden together and learn about growing food”. Excess food products from the project will be donated to community members. “We have already planted lettuce in December which has come up in recent weeks and a modest crop is nearly ready. We are almost ready for the next planting cycle”, Stewart said.
Underground Railroad Education Center is a non-profit organization that focuses its work on researching the local, national and international story of the Underground Railroad and connecting that story to our current times. Other projects of note engaged in by the Center include the restoration of the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence, Young Abolitionist Leadership Institute and the annual Underground Railroad Public History Conference.
The Hoop House is most easily accessed from the Third Street side of The Myers Residence Campus. It can alco be accessed b walking through the backyard of The Myers Residence.
