Staff Expansion at Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region
Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, Inc. (URHPCR) is pleased to announce the hiring of Thearse McCalmon of Schenectady as Director of Programs. Ms. McCalmon holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Union Graduate College in Schenectady and a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Russell Sage College in Troy. Ms. McCalmon has experience as a classroom educator and prior experience as Program Director of the Young Abolitionist Teen Scholars’ Institute which is a four week teen program conducted by Underground Railroad History Project every July at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence UGRR Campus. Ms. McCalmon has volunteered with Underground Railroad History Project for four years. Partial funding for this position is made available througha NYSCA Workforce Investment 2015 grant.
“Thearse is a strong worker and a great teacher. We really look forward to her joining the team”, said Mary Liz Stewart, Executive Director of Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region. “She did outstanding work for the summer program last year and we have great expectations for her coming work”, she said.
URHPCR is a non-profit 501 c 3 organization dedicated to researching and celebrating the story of the Underground Railroad in its local and international context, and relating that history to us today. Its primary initiatives include the restoration of the historic, award winning Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence in Albany, organizing and annual pubic history conference, maintaining heritage gardens, and conducting youth programs.
